CHAPTER VISUAL

Psalms 51 — After Nathan’s rebuke, David confesses bloodguilt, pleads for cleansing and a renewed spirit, and longs to teach and praise again.

About this illustration

Bathsheba and David’s sin are not reenacted; water, hyssop, contrition, music, and Zion keep the focus on repentance and restoration.

Scripture basis: Psalms 51:1–19
  1. 1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
  2. 2Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
  3. 3For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
  4. 4Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
  5. 5Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
  6. 6Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
  7. 7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
  8. 8Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
  9. 9Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
  10. 10Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
  11. 11Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
  12. 12Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
  13. 13Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
  14. 14Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
  15. 15O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
  16. 16For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
  17. 17The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
  18. 18Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
  19. 19Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

Legally Blind

Pastor Dean Odle warns that believers can become spiritually blind through pride, passivity, and failure to practice or rightly interpret Scripture. Moving from James 1 and Jesus' confrontations with the Pharisees to Paul's pastoral commands and Christ's rebuke of Laodicea, he urges humility, careful study, prayer, and honest self-examination. Odle applies the warning to disputes over salvation, spiritual gifts, women in ministry, and biblical creation, attributing deception to isolated proof texts and resistance to correction. He closes from 2 Corinthians 5 with the judgment seat of Christ, a call to be reconciled to God, and a prayer for the Holy Spirit to open believers' eyes.

The Great Whore (Part 2)

In The Great Whore (Part 2), Pastor Dean Odle argues that Jesus Christ is sufficient as Savior, high priest, intercessor, and the one mediator between God and humanity. Beginning with his own struggle, weakness, and need for grace, he contrasts biblical faith in Christ's blood with religious systems that, in his view, place Mary, saints, priests, sacraments, images, relics, or church tradition between the believer and Christ. First Timothy 2:5-6, Romans 3 and 5, Exodus 20, and Colossians 2 form the message's principal biblical foundation.

The Heart of Mankind - Part 3: The Hardened Heart

Pastor Dean Odle warns that Christians can gradually harden their hearts through hidden sin, unbelief, rationalization, and refusal to hear God’s voice. Beginning with Jeremiah 17 and Ezekiel 8, he emphasizes that God sees what is concealed within the heart. Hebrews 3 then supplies the central warning: people addressed as holy brethren must take heed lest sin’s deceitfulness harden them and lead them away from the living God.

Come Honestly

A Scripture-rich gospel appeal to come to Jesus without pretense: confessing sin, trusting His crucifixion and resurrection, receiving salvation by grace through faith, and following Him in repentance and new life.
