CHAPTER VISUAL

Psalms 90 — The everlasting God is the dwelling place of brief human generations, who ask for wisdom, mercy, and established work.

About this illustration

Flood, sleep, grass, years, and human labor form a meditation on mortality without depicting divine anger bodily.

Scripture basis: Psalms 90:1–17
  1. 1A Prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.
  2. 2Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
  3. 3Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.
  4. 4For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.
  5. 5Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up.
  6. 6In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.
  7. 7For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled.
  8. 8Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.
  9. 9For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.
  10. 10The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
  11. 11Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.
  12. 12So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
  13. 13Return, O LORD, how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants.
  14. 14O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
  15. 15Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.
  16. 16Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.
  17. 17And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

No Looking Back

Pastor Dean Odle uses an old family plow to illustrate Jesus’s warning in Luke 9:62 about following Him without looking back. Beginning with Romans 8 and John 10, he argues that discipleship requires continually hearing Christ’s voice, resisting the flesh, and surrendering self-will. He examines the excuses in Luke 14, shares personal accounts of ministry decisions, correction, and restoration, and turns to 1 John 2 and Proverbs 3 to urge trust in God’s direction. The sermon closes with warnings drawn from Lot’s wife and the parable of the talents, calling listeners to examine their faith, abide in Christ, and move forward in obedient, fruitful service.

The Reshaping of Christianity

In “The Reshaping of Christianity,” Pastor Dean Odle warns that Christianity can be counterfeited when biblical authority and personal devotion to Jesus Christ are replaced by religious ritual, institutional loyalty, political identity, occult spirituality, or a universalized “Christ” acceptable to every religion. Beginning with Israel’s golden calf in Exodus 31-32, he argues that people may retain the language of worship while fashioning a god from their own culture and imagination. He connects that pattern with Paul’s warning about “another Jesus,” “another spirit,” and “another gospel” in 2 Corinthians 11 and Galatians 1.

Church History & Function #12 - The Key of David: Heart of Worship

In “Church History & Function #12 - The Key of David - Heart of Worship,” Pastor Dean Odle presents a Scripture-centered message about worship, David’s example, the condition of the church. Drawing especially from Revelation 3, Deuteronomy 21, Psalm 80, Psalm 90, the teaching emphasizes that true worship centers on God and is expressed through reverence, surrender, and obedience. Odle connects that foundation with the conviction that David’s choices are used to examine leadership, testing, repentance, and renewed dependence on God.
