About this illustration

Market abundance, rain, seed, bread, and transformed thorns combine the chapter’s invitations and metaphors. No coins change hands, preserving the gift without price.

Scripture basis: Isaiah 55:1–13
  1. 1Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
  2. 2Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
  3. 3Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.
  4. 4Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people.
  5. 5Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee.
  6. 6 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
  7. 7Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
  8. 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
  9. 9For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
  10. 10For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
  11. 11So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
  12. 12For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
  13. 13Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the LORD for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

Oh They Perish

In “Oh They Perish,” Pastor Dean Odle reflects on Jesus weeping over Jerusalem and argues that Christians should share Christ’s grief for people who are spiritually lost. Moving through Luke 19, Ecclesiastes 8, and the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16, he stresses judgment, repentance, and the urgency of proclaiming the gospel. Odle criticizes churches that avoid hell, Christ’s exclusivity, biblical authority, and sound doctrine, while calling every believer—not only pastors—to evangelize boldly. Personal testimony, Daniel’s end-time witness, and Paul’s travail for the Galatians support his appeal for compassionate truth-telling, perseverance, and obedience to Jesus Christ.

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ

In The Second Coming of Jesus Christ, Pastor Dean Odle warns against teachings that claim Christ already returned, the millennial reign has already occurred, and believers now live in Satan's 'little season.' He begins with the apostolic command to abide in the doctrine of Christ and to reject deceivers, then reads Matthew 24 as a chronological description of a future, unmistakable, worldwide return. Odle emphasizes that the sun and moon will be darkened, the stars will fall, heaven will be rolled back, the mountains and islands will be removed, every tribe will see Christ, and the elect will be gathered after the tribulation.

The Book of Enoch

In “The Book of Enoch,” Pastor Dean Odle begins a series examining whether 1 Enoch should be received as genuine prophecy. He does not argue that it must be added to the biblical canon. Instead, he proposes that its claims should be judged by the written Word and the witness of the Holy Spirit, appealing especially to Genesis 5:21-24, Hebrews 11:5-6, and Jude 14-15. Jude’s attribution of a judgment prophecy to “Enoch the seventh from Adam” is the sermon’s central biblical basis.
