The seven trumpets of Revelation are a sequence of end-time judgments that began to sound in the twentieth century and will reach their conclusion at the visible return of Jesus Christ. The first trumpet was fulfilled in World War I, the second in World War II, the third in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and the fifth in the Gulf War. The fulfillment of the fourth trumpet has not yet been identified. The sixth trumpet is the next great judgment clearly set before the world: a catastrophic war centered on the Euphrates region. The seventh is the last trumpet, when Christ takes the kingdoms of this world, raises the dead in Christ, gathers His people, and brings the mystery of God to its appointed finish.

Read the whole trumpet cycle

–11 presents one connected trumpet cycle. The first four angels sound in . The fifth and sixth trumpets are revealed in . declares that, when the seventh angel begins to sound, the mystery of God will be finished. records that final trumpet and the proclamation that the kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of the Lord and of His Christ. The sequence begins with judgment entering the earth and ends with Jesus Christ openly reigning over it.

The trumpets are not confined to a future seven-year period

Scripture never says that all seven trumpets must occur inside Daniel’s final seven years. That limitation comes from arranging the seals, trumpets, and vials as twenty-one consecutive judgments, but Revelation does not present them that way. The seals cover the long course that leads to Christ’s return. The trumpets cover a shorter course that reaches the same end. The vials cover the final and most concentrated outpouring of wrath, and they also end at the coming of Christ. These prophetic cycles overlap, each revealing the end from a different point of view.

The heavenly signs before the first trumpet

Before the first trumpet sounds, shows the prayers of the saints rising before God, fire from the altar cast into the earth, voices, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake. History followed this order. A great movement of prayer began in 1857 and continued into the opening years of the twentieth century. The Welsh Revival of 1904–1905 was followed by the outpouring at Azusa Street beginning in April 1906, when the fire of the Holy Spirit was accompanied by voices and languages. Nine days after the outpouring began, the great San Francisco earthquake struck on April 18, 1906. Prayer, fire, voices, and a great earthquake appeared in the same order Revelation gives immediately before the trumpets, preparing the way for the first trumpet in 1914.

The first trumpet — World War I

The first trumpet was fulfilled in World War I. describes hail and fire mingled with blood cast into the earth, with trees and green grass burned within the area of judgment. World War I introduced artillery warfare on an unprecedented scale. Shells were launched into the sky and rained down like deadly hail, exploding in fire and tearing men apart. Artillery caused most battlefield casualties. Chemical weapons, trench warfare, bombardment, and deliberate scorched-earth policies stripped the principal battlefields of grass, trees, crops, towns, and human life. John was not describing ordinary weather. He was seeing the mechanized destruction that opened the age of world war.

The second trumpet — World War II

The second trumpet was fulfilled in World War II. shows something like a great mountain burning with fire cast into the sea, followed by death in the sea and the destruction of a third of the ships. World War II was the greatest naval war in history. More ships fought and were destroyed than in any previous conflict. The war also introduced the atomic bomb. Its mountain of fire rose over Japan, an island nation in the sea, and revealed a weapon capable of consuming entire cities. The burning mountain and the unparalleled destruction of ships identify the second trumpet with the Second World War.

The third trumpet — Chernobyl and Wormwood

The third trumpet was fulfilled on April 26, 1986, in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. names a burning star called Wormwood that falls upon rivers and fountains of waters, makes the waters bitter, and causes many deaths. Chernobyl released hundreds of times more radioactive material than the Hiroshima bomb. Fallout spread across Europe, descended in radioactive rain, entered soil, rivers, groundwater, crops, livestock, and human bodies, and continued producing disease and death long after the explosion.

The name is the unmistakable marker. Chernobyl is the Ukrainian name associated with wormwood, and the disaster became so closely connected with Revelation that a memorial in the region depicts an angel blowing a trumpet and is known as the Wormwood Star Memorial. The place, the name, the contamination of waters, and the continuing deaths all converge in one event. The third trumpet did not merely resemble Chernobyl; Chernobyl fulfilled the warning of Wormwood.

The fourth trumpet — a fulfillment not yet identified

says that a third part of the sun, moon, and stars is struck so that a third part of the day and night is darkened. The fulfillment of this trumpet has not yet been identified with certainty. Scripture establishes what must occur even when history has not yet made every detail clear. The fourth trumpet therefore remains an open marker in the sequence: a real judgment involving the partial darkening of the heavenly lights, to be recognized by the measure and details God gave rather than assigned to an event that does not fully account for the prophecy.

The fifth trumpet — the Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm

The fifth trumpet was fulfilled in the 1990–1991 Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm. describes a shaft opened under demonic authority, furnace-like smoke that darkens the sun and air, and locust-like forces prepared for battle. The Greek word translated “pit” can also describe a well or shaft. In Kuwait, hundreds of oil wells became burning shafts that poured dense, furnace-like smoke across the sky until daylight itself was darkened. Out of the setting of those burning wells came an air war led by armored attack helicopters whose appearance and movement correspond to the strange war machines John described in first-century language.

The locusts are shaped like horses prepared for battle. They have faces like men, breastplates as of iron, wings whose sound is like chariots and many horses rushing to war, and tails like scorpions with stings. The Apache attack helicopters that fired the opening shots of the air campaign carried armored bodies, visible human faces in their cockpits, pounding rotor wings, and projecting tails with rapidly turning tail rotors. They attacked people and military targets rather than vegetation, exactly as the locusts were commanded not to hurt the grass, green growth, or trees. Roughly five and a half months passed from Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990, to the Apache-led opening strike on January 17, 1991, corresponding to Revelation’s five-month period. The destroying ruler over the locust host is called Abaddon and Apollyon—Destroyer—and the name Saddam comes from an Arabic root associated with striking, clashing, and violent confrontation. The wells, smoke, darkened sky, locust-like aircraft, human faces, iron armor, thunderous wings, scorpion-like tails, five-month interval, and destroying king form one cumulative identification: the fifth trumpet was Operation Desert Storm.

The sixth trumpet — the coming war at the Euphrates

The sixth trumpet has not yet been completed. describes a world war unleashed when four bound angels at the great river Euphrates are released at the exact hour, day, month, and year appointed by God. John hears the number of an army of two hundred million and sees fire, smoke, and brimstone kill a third of mankind. This is a literal war of a scale the world has never witnessed, and the language points to nuclear or comparable weapons of mass destruction.

The geography is exact. The Euphrates begins in Turkey, runs through Syria and Iraq, and reaches the border of Iran before emptying into the Persian Gulf. That region is already the meeting place of the powers named in related end-time prophecies, including the alignment described in . The sixth-trumpet war is not Armageddon. It comes before the final battle and will create the fear, instability, and demand for global control through which the last world kingdom will rise. Nations will be willing to surrender sovereignty and military power to a ruler who appears able to prevent total annihilation.

The terrible sentence after the sixth trumpet

Even after a third of mankind is killed, says that the survivors will not repent of worshiping devils and idols, nor of murder, sorcery, sexual immorality, and theft. Judgment alone does not soften a heart that is determined to resist God. This is why prophecy must lead to repentance now. The proper response is to renounce sin and every idol, receive the mercy offered through Jesus Christ, obey His Word, and warn others while there is still time to turn.

The seventh trumpet — Christ’s kingdom and the resurrection

The seventh trumpet is the last trumpet. declares that the mystery of God is finished when the seventh angel sounds. announces the kingdom of Jesus Christ, the wrath of God, the judgment of the dead, and the reward of His servants. Paul speaks of the same moment in –52: the dead are raised incorruptible and living believers are changed at the last trump. describes the Lord descending with the trumpet of God, the dead in Christ rising, and the living saints being caught up to meet Him.

The resurrection and gathering of the saints therefore occur at the visible return of Jesus Christ, not in a secret removal before the trumpet judgments. places the appearing of the Son of Man and the gathering of His elect after the tribulation. Jesus repeatedly promised to raise His people at the last day. At the seventh trumpet, Christ gathers the righteous, rewards His servants, pours out His final wrath upon the rebellious kingdoms of this world, and establishes His rightful rule.

The seals, trumpets, and vials meet at the same end

The closing language of each prophetic cycle proves their overlap. The sixth seal brings the great day of the Lamb’s wrath and the visible signs Jesus placed immediately after the tribulation. The seventh seal is silence in heaven before the judgment proceeds. The seventh trumpet declares that the mystery of God is finished and that the time of wrath, judgment, and reward has come. The seventh vial declares, “It is done,” as the cities of the nations fall. These are not separate endings years apart. They are converging revelations of the same last day and the same victorious return of Christ.

How to live in the days of the trumpets

The first three trumpets and the fifth have been identified in modern history, while the exact fulfillment of the fourth remains unknown and the terrible sixth-trumpet war still lies ahead. This knowledge is not given to satisfy curiosity or encourage date-setting. It is a warning to become spiritually awake. Believers must know the Word, pray, repent quickly, reject deception, proclaim the gospel, prepare to endure persecution, and refuse to place their trust in wealth, government, or national power. The coming judgments are certain, but so are God’s authority over them and His faithfulness to those who belong to Jesus Christ.

The final sound belongs to Jesus Christ

The trumpet cycle ends in hope for everyone who is in Christ. Evil will not govern the earth forever. The dead in Christ will rise. Faithful believers will be changed. The servants of God will receive their reward. Every kingdom that defies the Lord will fall, and Jesus Christ will reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. The trumpets are heaven’s warning that history is moving toward a fixed conclusion: judgment for unrepentant rebellion and eternal victory for the Lamb and all who remain faithful to Him.
