Begin with the sequence Jesus gave
Jesus gave the order of end-time events plainly in . First comes great tribulation. During that tribulation, false christs and false prophets perform great signs in an attempt to deceive even the elect. Immediately after the tribulation, the sun is darkened, the moon withholds its light, the stars fall, and the powers of heaven are shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man appears, the nations see Him coming in the clouds with power and great glory, and His angels gather His elect with a great trumpet. The words “immediately after the tribulation” establish the order beyond dispute.
Tribulation → cosmic signs → the visible coming of Christ → the trumpet gathering of the elect.
The rapture is the first resurrection
The word “rapture” is commonly used for the catching away of believers, but Scripture identifies the event as the resurrection and gathering of the saints. The dead in Christ are raised first. Believers who remain alive are then changed and caught up together with them to meet the Lord. This is not an event separate from the resurrection, and it is not a separate coming of Christ. It is the first resurrection at His visible return.
One public coming, resurrection, and gathering
Christ does not return secretly. Jesus warned His disciples not to believe anyone who says He is hidden in the desert or in a secret chamber. His coming will be as unmistakable as lightning shining from east to west. The tribes of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming in the clouds, and confirms that every eye will see Him. The resurrection and catching away occur as part of this public appearing, not during an invisible coming years earlier.
Paul describes the same event
describes the Lord Himself descending from heaven with a shout, the voice of the archangel, and the trumpet of God. The dead in Christ rise first. Then the believers who are alive and remain are caught up together with the resurrected saints to meet the Lord in the air. This is the same event Jesus described: Christ descends, the trumpet sounds, and His people are gathered to Him.
adds the transformation of the saints. The dead are raised incorruptible and living believers are changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. The trumpet cannot be called the last trumpet if an entire series of prophetic trumpets must sound afterward. Paul places the resurrection and transformation at the final trumpet, when death is swallowed up in victory.
What Paul says must happen first
directly joins “the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” with “our gathering together unto him.” Paul warns believers not to be deceived: that day will not come until the falling away occurs and the man of sin is revealed. The man of sin exalts himself in the temple of God and presents himself as God. He is not destroyed until the Lord comes in brightness and power. The church’s gathering therefore cannot occur before the Antichrist is revealed.
The return of Christ is not an event that could have happened at any moment throughout the church age. Scripture names events that must come first: apostasy, the revealing of the man of sin, his blasphemous claim in the holy place, great tribulation, the persecution of the saints, and the cosmic signs. Believers are commanded to watch because God has revealed the order, not because the order is unknowable.
and Revelation tell the same ending
The seals of Revelation follow the same order Jesus gave in . The fifth seal shows martyred believers waiting for God to avenge their blood, confirming that persecution continues before Christ appears. The sixth seal then brings a great earthquake, the darkening of the sun, the moon becoming as blood, the stars falling, and heaven departing like a scroll. These are the same cosmic signs Jesus placed immediately after the tribulation.
At the sixth seal, the kings, rulers, and mighty men see the One seated upon the throne and attempt to hide from the wrath of the Lamb. They announce that the great day of His wrath has come. This is the visible second coming of Jesus Christ. and are not describing two different darkenings of the heavens or two different appearances. They describe the same end-time event from complementary perspectives.
The multitude comes out of great tribulation
After the sixth-seal signs and the appearing of Christ, shows a great multitude suddenly standing before the throne. They come from every nation, kindred, people, and language. Scripture identifies them plainly: “These are they which came out of great tribulation.” They are not removed before tribulation; they come out of it. Their robes are white because they have washed them in the blood of the Lamb, and God receives them into His presence.
The last trumpet reaches the kingdom
says that the mystery of God is finished when the seventh angel sounds. records that trumpet: the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of Christ, the nations are angry, God’s wrath comes, the dead are judged, and His servants receive their reward. This seventh trumpet is Paul’s last trumpet. The resurrection, transformation, and gathering of the saints belong at the climax of the age, when Jesus takes the kingdoms of this world.
Tribulation is not the same as God’s wrath
Great tribulation is the persecution and affliction Satan and the Antichrist direct against God’s people. The wrath of God is the judgment God directs against the wicked. Scripture promises that believers are not appointed to God’s wrath; it never promises that they will escape persecution. Jesus said His followers would be hated, betrayed, afflicted, and killed, and He commanded them to endure to the end. God is able to preserve His people from His judgments while they remain on the earth, and He gathers them at Christ’s appearing as the last great day of wrath begins.
The exodus establishes the biblical pattern of protection. Israel remained in Egypt while the plagues fell, yet God made a distinction between His people and the Egyptians. Noah remained on the earth while God preserved him through the flood. Lot remained in Sodom until the day judgment fell, and the same day he was taken out, fire and brimstone destroyed the city. God is able to preserve His people in the place of trouble and remove them at the appointed moment without taking them away years before judgment.
Gathering and wrath on the same day
says that the day Noah entered the ark, the flood came, and the same day Lot left Sodom, fire and brimstone fell. Jesus declared that it will be the same when the Son of Man is revealed. The saints are gathered at Christ’s appearing, and His wrath falls upon the rebellious world on that same great day. The church escapes God’s wrath because Christ gathers His people as the day begins, not because they disappeared before the years of tribulation.
The first resurrection includes those who resisted the beast
places believers who resisted the beast within the first resurrection. They were killed for the witness of Jesus because they refused to worship the beast or his image and would not receive his mark. They are raised and reign with Christ for a thousand years. If these martyrs participate in the first resurrection, the first resurrection cannot have occurred before the beast’s persecution. There is no earlier resurrection of the church hidden elsewhere in Scripture.
Scripture presents two great resurrections separated by the thousand-year reign of Christ. The first resurrection belongs to the righteous at Christ’s coming. The rest of the dead do not live again until the thousand years are finished. Dividing the righteous resurrection into an earlier secret resurrection and a later resurrection of tribulation saints creates an additional event that Revelation does not teach.
The purpose is readiness, not speculation
The timing matters because false hope produces an unprepared church. Believers who expect to escape before the Antichrist appears may not be ready for deception, economic pressure, persecution, imprisonment, or martyrdom. Jesus warned His disciples beforehand so they would not be deceived. Revelation honors the saints who overcome by the blood of the Lamb, by the word of their testimony, and by refusing to love their lives unto death.
Biblical readiness begins with repentance and genuine new birth. It continues through obedience, prayer, knowledge of the written Word, and complete loyalty to Jesus Christ. Believers must settle now that they will not worship the beast, receive his mark, or deny Christ to preserve comfort or life. They must strengthen one another, proclaim the gospel without fear, and trust God to sustain them through every trial.
The hope after the tribulation
The hope of the church is not escape from every hardship. Our hope is Jesus Christ. Immediately after the tribulation, He will appear in power and great glory. He will destroy the wicked one, vindicate His witnesses, raise the dead in Christ, transform the believers who remain alive, and gather every one of His elect. The saints will meet Him in the air and remain with Him forever. Therefore watch, endure, remain faithful, and comfort one another: the coming King will not forget or lose a single person who belongs to Him.
