The Future Return of Jesus Christ and Faithful Endurance Through Tribulation
The Second Coming has not already occurred and will not be a hidden or merely symbolic event. Jesus places the gathering of His elect after the tribulation; Paul places our gathering after the falling away and revelation of the man of sin. The church is promised deliverance from God’s wrath, not exemption from persecution or the Antichrist’s coercion.
THE SHORT
AFFIRMATION.
We believe Jesus Christ will return personally, visibly, and in power and glory, and that His people must be prepared to endure the great tribulation before their gathering to Him.
The return of Jesus will be future, personal, and unmistakable
When Jesus ascended, the angels said that the same Jesus would return in the same manner in which the disciples saw Him go. The New Testament does not reduce His coming to a private spiritual experience, the destruction of Jerusalem, or the gradual improvement of society. Every eye will see Him, the nations will mourn, the heavens will be shaken, and He will appear as King of kings.
Christ's return is joined to resurrection, judgment, the defeat of the beast, and the vindication of His faithful people. Because those events remain future, the Second Coming remains future as well.
Jesus places the gathering after the tribulation
Matthew 24 gives an intelligible sequence: deception, conflict, persecution, apostasy, the abomination of desolation, great tribulation, cosmic signs, the visible appearing of the Son of Man, and the trumpet gathering of the elect. Jesus says the signs and gathering occur immediately after the tribulation. That sequence should govern systems constructed from less explicit passages.
Paul describes the same public hope: the Lord descends, the dead in Christ rise, and living believers are caught up with them. He also warns that the coming of Christ and our gathering to Him will not occur before the falling away and the revelation of the man of sin.
Tribulation is not the same as the wrath of God
Scripture plainly says that believers are not appointed to God's wrath. It also plainly says that Christ's followers will suffer tribulation, persecution, betrayal, imprisonment, and sometimes death. The promise of deliverance from divine wrath must not be changed into a promise that the church cannot face the Antichrist or great tribulation.
Revelation honors saints who resist the beast, refuse his worship and mark, and remain faithful unto death. Their presence in the first resurrection shows that the first resurrection cannot already have occurred before the beast's persecution.
The purpose of prophecy is faithful readiness
This doctrine is not an invitation to date-setting. Jesus gave warnings so His people would recognize deception and endure. Believers should settle beforehand that they will not worship the beast, receive his mark, deny Christ, or trade faithfulness for economic security or temporary safety.
The church's hope is not a guarantee of escape from every hardship. Our hope is Jesus Christ Himself. He will raise the dead, transform the living saints, gather His elect, destroy the wicked one, and reign. Therefore believers can comfort one another while also preparing one another to stand.
THE SCRIPTURAL
FOUNDATION.

A future and visible appearing
Jesus returns as the same Lord who ascended, seen by the world and revealed in glory rather than hidden in a private chamber or completed only as a symbol.
Resurrection and gathering at His coming
The dead are raised and living believers are changed at the last trumpet when the Lord descends; Jesus repeatedly locates resurrection at the last day.
The events that precede our gathering
Jesus places the gathering after tribulation, and Paul says the coming and gathering will not precede apostasy and the revelation of the man of sin.
Protected from wrath, called to endurance
The church is not appointed to God’s wrath, yet the saints are repeatedly commanded to endure persecution and refuse the beast and his mark.
IMPORTANT
DISTINCTIONS.
These notes clarify what the affirmation means, what it does not claim, and where terminology can hide a material difference.
Watchfulness is not date-setting
Scripture supplies events and sequence so believers can recognize and obey; it does not authorize inventing a calendar date for Christ’s return.
Tribulation and divine wrath are distinct
Persecution directed at the saints is not the same thing as God’s judgment directed at the rebellious world.
The gathering belongs to Christ’s public appearing
Watchman 33 does not separate an invisible pre-tribulation coming from a later visible return.
