is not merely a catalogue of frightening animals. The interpreting angel tells Daniel that the beasts are kings or kingdoms, carries the vision forward to divine judgment, and ends with the everlasting kingdom given to the saints of the Most High. Watchman 33 therefore reads the chapter as a prophetic map of major powers present near the close of the age. In this teaching, the lion with eagle’s wings represents Great Britain and the United States; the bear represents Russia; the four-headed, four-winged leopard represents a German-led European power joined closely with France; and the dreadful fourth beast represents the final ten-king system ruled by the Antichrist.

Begin with what Daniel explains

gives the symbols. says, “These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth,” and verse 23 calls the fourth beast “the fourth kingdom upon earth.” The beasts are therefore political powers, not literal animals.

The timing is central to the Watchman 33 reading. Daniel sees the Ancient of Days sit in judgment, the fourth beast destroyed, the other beasts continuing for “a season and time,” and the Son of man receiving an everlasting dominion (). , 22, and 26–27 likewise bring the vision to the time when the saints possess the kingdom. and add that Daniel’s words are sealed “till the time of the end.” On that basis, this teaching understands the four beasts should be sought among powers that arise into their prophetic role late in history and remain on the world stage when the final kingdom appears.

This is a modern geopolitical interpretation. A long-established Christian reading identifies the sequence as Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome; many critical scholars instead identify Babylon, Media, Persia, and Greece. Those alternatives deserve to be stated because Daniel does not name the four kingdoms in chapter 7. The case below explains why Watchman 33 reaches a different conclusion without pretending that the disputed identifications are explicit in the text.

The four identities at a glance

  • First beast — Lion with eagle’s wings: Great Britain with the United States emerging from it.
  • Second beast — Bear: Russia.
  • Third beast — Four-headed leopard with four fowl wings: a German-led European power joined with France, expressed today in the Franco-German engine of European integration.
  • Fourth beast — Dreadful, iron-toothed beast with ten horns: the final Antichrist kingdom, expected to gather the earlier powers into a worldwide political system.

The lion and eagle — Great Britain and America

describes a lion bearing eagle’s wings. The wings are plucked, the lion is lifted from the earth, and it is made to stand like a man. The identification begins with symbols that the two nations actually use. The Royal Family’s official explanation of the United Kingdom’s Royal Arms identifies the lions of England and the supporting English lion. The Great Seal of the United States, adopted in 1782, places the American bald eagle at its center.

The historical separation is equally concrete. The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The Declaration said that the colonies’ political connection to Great Britain “is and ought to be totally dissolved.” The separation was contested through war, and the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783, brought formal British recognition of American independence. In the Watchman 33 reading, the eagle was first joined to the lion and then violently removed: America came out of Britain and became a distinct sovereign power.

Read the connected prophecy evidence file, America’s Separation from Great Britain, for the documented 1776 and 1783 milestones and the interpretive qualification attached to this identification.

A memorable correspondence can also be observed between July 4, written 7/4, and . That correspondence is not proof: chapter and verse numbers were added long after Daniel. The case rests on the symbols, the historical relationship between the nations, the act of separation, and the chapter’s kingdom interpretation—not on the modern numbering coincidence.

The bear — Russia

presents a bear raised on one side, holding three ribs in its mouth, and commanded to arise and devour much flesh. “The Russian bear” has been a durable national personification for centuries, even though it is not Russia’s official state emblem and began largely as a Western image of Russian power. That distinction matters: the symbol is culturally recognizable, but it is not an official heraldic identification like the British lion or American eagle.

Watchman 33 connects the bear’s violent appetite with the vast military expansion, revolution, state terror, and mass death associated with imperial Russia and especially the Soviet era. The raised side and the three ribs have received many proposed explanations, but the available evidence does not settle them. A responsible reading should leave those details open rather than force three modern territories or wars into the text.

The leopard and fowl wings — Germany, France, and Europe

shows a swift leopard with four wings of a fowl, four heads, and dominion given to it. This interpretation identifies the leopard with German power within Europe and the fowl wings with France. France’s own presidency explains that the Gallic rooster remains an emblem of France. Germany does not officially use a leopard as its national emblem, so the German connection is more inferential: Leopard is the name of Germany’s principal battle-tank family, and German heraldry includes leopards in regional arms. The Bundeswehr calls the Leopard 2 the standard tank of its armored force.

The strongest historical element is not an animal emblem by itself but the extraordinary union of former rivals. France and Germany signed the Élysée Treaty in 1963, establishing structured cooperation after repeated wars. The 2019 Treaty of Aachen explicitly deepened their cooperation and integration. Their partnership has repeatedly been described by their governments as foundational to European integration. Watchman 33 reads the fowl wings on the leopard as France giving reach to a German-centered European structure.

One proposed interpretation is that the four heads represent four rises of German or German-centered dominion in Europe, with the present European project treated as the fourth. The song “Daniel’s Beasts” incorporates the German Leopard, France’s rooster, the Élysée and Aachen treaties, and European integration, but it also models needed restraint by declining to force a final explanation of every head. “First Reich,” “Second Reich,” and “Third Reich” are historical labels; calling the European Union a “Fourth Reich” is an interpretive and polemical claim, not the EU’s own identity. The working identification is therefore clear—German-led European power joined with France—while the exact correspondence of all four heads remains provisional.

The fourth beast — the final Antichrist kingdom

The fourth beast is not compared to a known animal. It is dreadful, exceedingly strong, armed with iron teeth, different from the others, and crowned with ten horns (). The angel says the ten horns are ten kings and that another ruler rises among them, subdues three, speaks against the Most High, persecutes the saints, and rules for a time, times, and the dividing of time before the court removes his dominion (). This identifies the fourth beast as the final political kingdom of the Antichrist rather than merely another modern nation-state.

deliberately gathers Daniel’s imagery into one beast: it has ten horns and seven heads, a leopard-like body, bear-like feet, and a lion-like mouth, and the dragon gives it authority. The one head of the lion, one of the bear, four of the leopard, and one of the dreadful beast total the seven heads seen by John. Watchman 33 understands this composite form to mean that the earlier powers and their governing characteristics are absorbed into one final system.

The United Nations is relevant evidence, but it should not be confused with completed fulfillment. Its Security Council gives permanent status and veto power to China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. That places the British lion, American eagle, Russian bear, and French rooster inside one uniquely powerful governing council; meanwhile the Franco-German partnership supplies the European dimension proposed for the leopard. This teaching sees the structure as a likely framework for the final beast. The song states the conclusion more carefully: the system may emerge through the UN or through something new created after global crisis. Daniel requires a ten-king arrangement and an openly blasphemous persecuting ruler—features that have not yet appeared in their final form.

Listen to Daniel’s Beasts as a musical overview of the same study. Its central discipline is worth carrying into every prophetic claim: Scripture is certain; proposed mappings must be tested; unresolved details should remain unresolved until fulfillment makes them clear.

The beasts do not receive the final word

The point of is larger than identifying nations. Human kingdoms rise from a storm-tossed sea, rule for a measured time, and answer to the court of heaven. Even the final beast is given only a limited season. The vision ends with dominion transferred to the Son of man and to the saints of the Most High.

The beast gets its hour, but Christ gets the throne.

That is why prophecy should produce discernment, faithfulness, and readiness rather than fascination with political power. Examine the historical evidence, test the symbolic connections against the whole counsel of Scripture, hold uncertain details with humility, and keep the conclusion of the vision in view: “his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him” ().
