FOUNDATIONAL BELIEF

Marriage Is the Covenant Union of One Man and One Woman

God created humanity male and female and joined the man and woman as one flesh. Marriage calls husband and wife to exclusive faithfulness, sacrificial love, holiness, and covenant loyalty. Proposed marriage arrangements and sexual relationships outside this created order are contrary to Scripture.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

THE SHORT
AFFIRMATION.

We believe God established marriage as the exclusive covenant union of one man and one woman.

Marriage begins with God’s created order

Marriage is not merely a civil contract or a relationship whose definition changes with culture. Genesis records that God created humanity male and female, formed the woman for the man, and established the one-flesh union. Jesus returned to that beginning when answering questions about marriage: the Creator made them male and female, a man leaves father and mother and cleaves to his wife, and the two become one flesh.

That pattern identifies the parties and the covenant form: one man and one woman joined by God in an exclusive union. Scripture may report human departures from this pattern, including polygamy, adultery, and sexual disorder, without presenting those departures as the Creator’s design.

Marriage is a faithful covenant, not a temporary convenience

Malachi calls a wife the companion and wife of covenant. Hebrews says marriage is honorable and the marriage bed must remain undefiled. Husband and wife owe one another faithfulness, truth, care, and mutual responsibility rather than secrecy, exploitation, or betrayal.

The one-flesh covenant therefore excludes adultery and sexual relationships outside marriage. God’s commands are not intended to diminish love; they protect the covenant in which marital love, fidelity, family, and sexual union belong together.

Marriage bears witness to Christ and the church

Ephesians calls husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it. Wives and husbands are addressed as morally responsible disciples whose home should display honor, sacrifice, care, and holiness. Authority cannot be used to excuse domination, violence, manipulation, or sin.

The comparison with Christ and the church gives marriage spiritual seriousness. The covenant should show costly love and faithful belonging rather than the self-centered use of another person.

Scripture names sexual sin and also announces cleansing

Scripture identifies adultery, fornication, homosexual conduct, and other sexual practices outside the male-female marriage covenant as sin. Watchman 33 will not redefine conduct that Scripture calls contrary to God’s order. Any proposed marriage arrangement outside the union of one man and one woman is a perversion of that created pattern rather than another form of biblical marriage.

The same gospel that calls sin by its right name offers mercy and transformation. First Corinthians speaks to people from many sinful backgrounds and then declares that believers were washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God. Biblical conviction must therefore be joined to the call to repentance and the promise of a genuinely changed life.

IMPORTANT
DISTINCTIONS.

These notes clarify what the affirmation means, what it does not claim, and where terminology can hide a material difference.

Biblical description is not always approval

The Bible records polygamy and sexual sin in its histories, but Jesus identifies the creation pattern as the governing design.

Every person bears God-given dignity

Calling conduct sinful does not authorize hatred, mockery, violence, or the denial of a person’s need for truth, mercy, and the gospel.

Covenant language never excuses abuse

No appeal to marital authority permits coercion, violence, sexual abuse, manipulation, or commands to disobey God.
