About this sermon

In “Redemption #10 - Hebrews,” Pastor Dean Odle presents a Scripture-centered message about God’s commandments, faith, sacrifice and surrender. Drawing especially from Galatians 2, Galatians 4, 2 Peter 3, Acts 15, the teaching emphasizes that God’s commands reveal His standard and direct the obedient life. Odle connects that foundation with the conviction that biblical faith trusts God’s character and acts upon His promises.

foreign [Music] Grace School of ministry we welcome you uh those who may be watching we never know we may sometimes we put these on Facebook and YouTube so if you happen to be just joining in class we welcome you too uh today we are week 10 and it's really Beyond week 10 because we're not counting the first week of the uh of the conference but this is actually class number 10 here on in Redemption redemption in this class just so you know the definition of this class is we we call it Redemption but it's dealing with the nature of Salvation what it means to be born again what it means uh what is necessary for us to be saved how do we continue to walk with the Lord so you know that's why we've started from the beginning talking about the blood of Jesus and the Redemption that is only through the blood and righteousness that is only through the blood of Jesus and uh of course the last couple of weeks I think or was it been just one but anyway I've had you guys on I know last week you guys uh watched a video an older video but dealing with the issue of the law versus Grace or the New Testament and Old Testament and so we're going to continue that today because we're going to look at the book of Galatians a little and the book of Hebrews and we're going to see how much we can get through what's that uh you know what I think I did not lock the door um anyway we will get into that but first I want to go to the book of Galatians this morning because we're going to continue to talk about the differences uh between the old Covenant law uh and the old Covenant requirements versus the New Covenant requirements of course many of you know there's been an ongoing debate in battle with certain Torah observant he break roots individuals leaders out there and people and it continues but uh this is something you have to be grounded in because it's not a secondary issue it's not a side issue it is a Salvation issue and that is how are we saved how do we stay in that or or keep that and abide in Christ how do we do that is it do we have to go back and keep old Covenant rights rituals ceremonies sabbaths feasts new moons all those things or do we walk in faith in obedience to a new law a new uh commandment set forth by Jesus and the apostles in the New Testament and I think that's easy to understand but as

we get into this this morning it's something I felt like we needed to as we as we move forward in this class and Redemption again this is I I guess we'll call this Redemption this is redemption class 10 part 3 on law versus Grace um our Old Testament versus new um but I want to read here because we're going to study try to study through the whole book of uh Hebrews and possibly Galatians 2 but I just want to look at the beginning of Galatians in my Bible now this is just the introduction because part of studying you might need to turn me down just there but part of studying uh the Bible or any particular book is you need to know who he's writing to especially it's in the Epistles who is this written to and why you know why is why is the holy spirit moving the Apostle to write this letter to a church or to a group of churches or to you know who who's he talking to now the book of Galatians I find it interesting because of course the Torah observers the he break roots movement out there they will tell they tell their new converts well no one understands the book of Galatians but us and I've discovered the Smoking Gun as to why and and the root of their why they think they have a completely new understanding and I'll get it more into this later but uh in what was it in the 1950s as they were digging in the uh and looking and searching the caves in qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls there was a uh several fragments found and one of them is and you need to write this down this is the Q4 mmt because it was qumran K4 and this manuscript mmt and again there was I think there was that there was a handful of them all right and this particular one of these manly scripts that was translated um was called the precepts of the law or some people want to say it's the works of the law and so what some of these Torah teachers and people have been falsely led to believe is that what Paul was referring to in Galatians when he says we are not under the works of the law they say he was referring to this document that was discovered in the Dead Sea Scrolls and that he was referring to this document which basically is all the additions the fence laws the expansions of the rabbis uh around the law that it's all the extras and so what Paul was referring to is all these extra laws for instance let's just say that I made a law and this is what we call a fence Law whatever that they the priest the

  3. 0:06:00

Pharisees and the Sadducees and the rabbis would do all right let's say there's a law you can't go in my backyard right but there's no fence around my backyard so to help you make sure you didn't go in my backyard the law didn't say I had to put up a fence but I put up a fence to help you keep the law right of not going in my backyard so the of course the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the rabbits they did add a lot of things a lot you know of rituals and traditions of men that they came up with to try to help people not break the laws basically here's the law I'm going to put something else in the way so that you make sure you don't break the law right so that was kind of what they're doing now what they say is that's what Paul's referring to but the problem is once again the Torah pushers the Torah observers the judaizers as we're going to see what that is in a second that want to push people back under the law of Moses the New Covenant Believers what they fail to realize is that if you go look at Galatians the context of what he's talking about is he talking about this document or is he talking about the Covenant from Sinai see Galatians 4 says he talks about Sarah and Hagar are an allegory of the two Covenants so do you see how they they'll they'll find something like this and they'll twist the entire thing out of country what's amazing is Pete they harp and harp and harp on Peter's warning in second Peter 3 about people twisting Paul's writings but they're the ones actually twisting it Paul's right because Paul's writings destroys the idea that to be a real Christian to really be righteous to really prove your love for God or even to prove you're saved that you have to go back and try to keep the Sabbath The Feast the new moons of circumcision the dietary laws the zits eats and all this other stuff they think you you you know they're they're pushing that you have to go do um Paul dealt with that in the book of Galatians the book of Hebrews it's dealt with in other letters and of course the apostles answered this question in Acts 15 we've kind of already covered that I mean the question too and how they try to dance around acts 15 I still don't know because the question was do the Gentiles do the New Testament believers that have come to Jesus outside of this thing we call Judaism do they have to be circumcised and keep the law of Moses what just circumcision do they have to be circumcised and keep the law of Moses it had nothing to do with this document The Works of the law or the precepts of the law all these fence ordinances but see this is what they do they have to reach they have to grab for these straws and they have to try to make it work but

I'm just going to read to you as we get into this this morning because I I've been meaning to do this in my Bible I have the Hebrew Greek keyword Study Bible again some of the notes and information is really good the study guides are really good it's got the Strong's Greek and Hebrew dictionaries in it it has the Greek verb tenses guide it has a lot of great study tools the introductions to the books uh kind of giving you who they're writing to the date the time period the people the circumstances all of that's really good and I'm just going to read part of this about Galatians this is the introduction to Galatians here but this is what he says about uh who Paul's writing to and why in The Book of Galatians let's look at and this is It's and I'm just going to read it to you so just listen it is generally accepted that Paul visited these Believers twice before he wrote this epistle during his absence teachers from Palestine or from Jerusalem Judea area called judaizers uh uh came from Palestine or from there called judaizers and insisted that these Gentile believers could not be true Christians until they submitted to the Jewish ordinance of circumcision furthermore they maintained that the Galatians must adhere to the law of Moses these naive galatian Christians accepted their teachings just as enthusiastically as they had Paul's the purpose of the book of Galatians is to combat this vicious heresy in which the work of Christ was considered insufficient for salvation uh the first way Paul chose to do this was to disprove the judaizer's claim that Paul was not a true Apostle and it amazing that that was the way they came at it Paul was not a true apostle they maintained that since he was not one of the 12 original Apostles he must have received his teachings in Doctrine second hand from the other Apostles Paul showed that he was equal with his uh with the original Apostles because he received his Doctrine from a revelation straight from Jesus Christ he had even rebuked the Apostle Peter when there was a dispute over whether he as a Jew should be allowed to disregard the the uh the Mosaic law and uh or not and that whole thing with the uh when they came from Jerusalem and and Peter was eating with the Gentiles then he separated himself and caused a great division because he was afraid and so even Peter's momentary slit back in trying to keep the law Paul rebuked right so that's what he's talking about there it says once he he had established his Apostolic Authority he proved that men are justified by faith in Christ atoning work rather than by The Works of the law this leads into the final topic of being led by the spirit the threat of the judaizers
