Rebellion & Offense
About this sermon
In “Rebellion & Offense,” Pastor Dean Odle presents a Scripture-centered message about the condition of the church, rebellion and obedience, spiritual leadership. Drawing especially from Romans 13, Hebrews 13, Numbers 12, Matthew 13, the teaching emphasizes that the church is called to recover biblical faithfulness instead of accommodating compromise. Odle connects that foundation with the conviction that rebellion resists God’s authority, while obedience submits desires and decisions to His word.

god that you are holy set apart and different from us or your ways are not our ways your thoughts are not our thoughts you are high and lifted up lord your wisdom is beyond measure lord your understanding your counsel your the depth god of your knowledge lord beyond anything we can fathom lord now we ask you to just continue to fill us when paul prayed a prayer for the ephesians he said he prayed that they would be filled with the spirit of wisdom and revelation and the knowledge of you so that they would know the hope of your calling lord they prayed he prayed for the colossians that they would be filled with the knowledge of your will god we just want to be filled with wisdom and knowledge we want to be filled with the knowledge of your will god individually corporately as a church now we want to honor you in everything we do we want to preach the truth we want to stand for it we want to be a light and a witness god help us win people around us to the lordship of jesus christ not just to believe in jesus but to submit to the lordship of jesus christ and be saved use us lord i pray in jesus name amen amen yeah that felt good hallelujah it is good to worship the lord praise be to god well does everyone have their bibles this morning i sure hope so y'all ready for part two of rebellion you know before i go into this you know i i want to share this um i don't know if i shared it last week but in the last few weeks before you know kind of before we got into this thing god was started dealing with me about this subject and actually he has for some time because um i know how important it is to understand spiritual authority both god's direct authority and god's delegated authority and of course within the church world there's always a tendency to get in either side of the ditch when it comes to any issue in the kingdom how many of you know that we've seen you know god's promises of prosperity are in the bible you know if you do certain things if you give if you sow if you obey when god promises to bless right but how many of us have seen that taken to a bad extreme in the church world i mean we've seen it on tv preachers that are just about

money and it's all about you know give this now let's give this thousand dollars so you can have the anointing i have that's a bunch of junk right there okay so just but just because somebody has taken something to an extreme or abused a certain truth or taking it too far and now it's an error does not mean we negate the truth you know on on giving we should still tithe we should still give offerings we should still do the things that god says to do well that's the same thing about this spiritual authority issue there was a movement in the 1970s called discipleship i happen to know and actually work with later in the 90s one of the men who was involved in that so i got to hear how they got into it and how they got off okay and it got so bad it was called either the shepherding movement or the discipleship movement um some some very good men got involved in it uh bob mumford a guy named uh a guy named derek prince that you all need to be i'm sure you're familiar with and derek prince you know once he realized that this thing got off got over in the ditch a little bit he got out of that and and all of them ended up getting out of it but what i'm saying is just because those men took it too far and started telling people you know they had spiritual authority to the point that you had to submit if you were going to go buy a car if you were going to go on a vacation and all kinds of stuff i mean it got to be very very controlling but then what happened in the church world instead of keeping balance and just bringing coming back to the middle a little bit the church world especially the charismatics and pentecostals just threw off and said well because because spiritual leadership became abusive and controlling therefore now we just throw it off all and you know we all can hear the holy spirit for ourselves and we don't need to listen to our any spiritual leaders and so we got into the other side of the ditch all right and that's why it's important to get teaching and to understand what the bible has to say about this because just because you don't like something in the bible doesn't mean you throw it out and and make up your own right the authority issue about being submitted to spiritual authority both god's direct authority and both authorities that god has placed on the earth is a serious matter with god and he has a lot to say about it in the bible we can't just chunk that out right so that's why it's important that we get a balanced view of this and understand it because i have seen people's lives shipwrecked in either direction all right i've been around this charismatic pentecostal movement now for 25 years and actually

longer than that considering the time i go back when i my great aunts and my great-grandmother took me to first assembly of god when i was a little kid for many years way back in the 70s so i've been around the spirit-filled movement a long time and i've seen stuff come and go all right i've seen good stuff come and go i've seen bad stuff come and go so let's just get in the word about this i want to review a little bit from last week i want you to turn to romans chapter 13. and what blessed me last week after uh i preached this is is several people came up to me and told me how different aspects of this they were dealing with it and how it helped them so this is a pretty exhaustive subject so uh maybe we can get through it in just two messages hebrew what'd i say i said romans didn't know i got romans 13 and hebrews 13. that's kind of should be kind of easy to remember there romans 13 let me get there and hebrews 13. now when i speak about god's delegated authorities let me explain what i mean before we read this god's delegated authorities are in what he calls and what we're going to read here is all authority is by god given by god they stand in a place ordained in office ordained by god even if they're evil now this is hard for us to accept but no one gets in a position of authority without god and without god knowing it and either allowing it or having a purpose for it i shared this last week about how god raised up moses and he's i mean pharaoh he said i raised up pharaoh for this very purpose and pharaoh was an evil authority but god said i raised him up to show my power so god will even use evil authorities and we'll talk about why you know we even have to obey even some evil authority sometimes not that if they tell us to do evil but if they give us a law like you know our government has problems everybody knows that but there's certain laws i mean we should listen to like the speeding and the seat belt and all these other things are for our protection and this is what god's talking about but the authorities i'm talking about they're civil authorities there's government authorities then there's authorities in the school children should listen to their teachers there's authority in the home the wife is supposed to be submitted to the authority of the husband and the children to the their mother and dad then there's spiritual authority in the church there's being submitted to your pastor and then there's pastors being submitted to other fivefold ministries nobody is exempt from this and if you think for one second because you can hear the holy spirit for yourself and every believer should i teach that but if you get the idea that

i'm an island to myself and i don't have to listen to anybody and i'm not accountable to anybody you will be deceived because you're breaking a principle in the word of god okay let's read this though in romans 13. um romans 13 verse 1 he says let every soul be subject unto the higher powers and the word powers there in the greek is the greek word exusia which means authorities some of your bibles may be translated authorities it says let every soul be subject submissive and that means submissive and obedient to higher authorities for there is no power or authority but of god and the powers or authority that be are ordained of god do you see that let every soul be submissive and obedient unto higher authorities for there is no power but of god no authority but of god and the powers that be are ordained of god and then he goes on to talk about he's going to get into a little bit even civil authority and you have to remember who's he writing this to the romans the whole world at this time known world was subject to roman authority and here's what's interesting jesus told them render unto caesar what is caesar's right peter even said if you go into peter's books honor the king who is the king caesar you see what i'm saying rome was evil yet they were in authority and what does he tell them obey those authorities respect those authorities there's reason why they're where they are and guess what guess whose job it is to deal with authority when they get out of hand gods and as you'll see in a minute we'll talk about this but it's never the people under authority's job to deal with authority god will deal with it and he'll deal with it pretty severely because he put him there all right let's look at this he goes on to say he says whosoever therefore this is verse 2 whosoever therefore resists the power or the authority resist the ordinance of god and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation see it is a serious thing to commit and live in the sin of rebellion it is the highest of satanic principles to be a rebel do you hear what i'm saying i said this last week when i say it again satan was not cast out of heaven because he was a fornicator or an adulterer or a drunkard or because he blasphemed he was thrown out of heaven because he said these words i will exalt my throne my authority above
