Religion cannot manufacture life
Nicodemus was informed, respected, and religious, yet Jesus told him, “Ye must be born again.” Knowledge of sacred things, family heritage, church attendance, and moral effort can shape behavior, but none of them can create spiritual life. Pastor Dean presses this distinction: salvation is not merely becoming more religious; God must make a person new.
Jesus compares the Spirit’s work to the wind. We cannot control it, yet its effects are real. The new birth is God’s gracious action, not a technique we master. It produces new desires, a new allegiance, and a growing willingness to come into the light.
Born from above through the living Word
The Greek word translated “again” can also mean “from above.” Both ideas fit Jesus’ teaching: the life we need must have its origin in God, and it is genuinely a new beginning. Ezekiel’s promise supplies the Old Testament background—cleansing, a new heart, and the Spirit within.
First Peter connects the new birth with the incorruptible Word of God. Scripture does not act as a charm. The Spirit uses the truth about Christ to expose sin, reveal the Savior, awaken faith, and form a people whose lives increasingly reflect the seed from which they were born.
Look to the Son and walk in the light
John 3 moves from new birth to the Son of man lifted up, so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. The object of faith is not the intensity of our experience. It is Jesus Christ, given by the Father and lifted up for sinners.
New birth becomes visible as a person comes to the light rather than protecting darkness. Growth can be gradual and believers still need correction, but the direction changes. A living faith does not make peace with hiding; it brings the whole life under Christ’s truth and mercy.
Words worth examining
Jesus uses birth language to describe a life only God can originate.
G509ἄνωθεν · anōthenfrom above; againJohn 3:3 points both to a new beginning and to its heavenly source.
G4100πιστεύω · pisteuōto believe; entrust oneselfJohn 3 repeatedly presents believing in the Son as the response to God’s saving gift.
G313ἀναγεννάω · anagennaōto beget againFirst Peter 1:23 describes believers as having been born again by God’s incorruptible Word.
Memory cue: Memorize John 3:3. Explain “born again” with the companion phrase “born from above.”
Prayer: Ask the Holy Spirit to expose false confidence, deepen your trust in Christ, and bring every hidden part of your life into His light.
This week: Write a brief testimony in three movements: what you trusted before Christ, how you came to understand the gospel, and what new direction He is producing. Keep private details private.

Put truth into practice
Reflection: Are you relying on Christ and His work, or on religious familiarity, family history, an experience, or your own record? What evidence of a new direction do you see?
