Understand the passage

The life is in the blood

Throughout Scripture, blood represents life poured out. The sacrificial system taught that sin brings death and that approach to a holy God requires atonement. Those repeated sacrifices were not an end in themselves; Hebrews reads them as shadows pointing beyond themselves to Christ.

Pastor Dean emphasizes the seriousness of blood in Scripture because the gospel is not forgiveness by divine indifference. God does not call evil good. At the cross, justice and mercy meet in the willing self-offering of the sinless Son.

Redeemed from an empty way of life

Redemption is release by payment. First Peter contrasts perishable silver and gold with the precious blood of Christ, the Lamb without blemish and without spot. The price reveals both the depth of our bondage and the immeasurable worth of the Redeemer.

Christ redeems not only from future judgment but also from the vain manner of life handed down to us. Salvation begins a holy pilgrimage. Because we were bought at such cost, we set our hope fully on grace, refuse former lusts, and learn to love one another with a pure heart fervently.

Draw near with a cleansed conscience

Hebrews presents Christ’s sacrifice as once for all. His blood opens a new and living way into God’s presence. Believers do not repeatedly create access by punishing themselves or performing religious acts; they draw near because the Priest and sacrifice are sufficient.

First John joins assurance with honesty. Walking in the light does not mean claiming we have no sin. It means we stop hiding, confess what God exposes, and rely on Jesus Christ the righteous—our advocate and propitiation. Cleansing leads back into fellowship, worship, love, and faithful community.

Memory cue: Memorize 1 Peter 1:18–19, emphasizing the contrast between corruptible things and the precious blood of Christ.

Prayer: Thank Christ for the cost of redemption. Confess any sin you have hidden, and draw near on the basis of His finished work rather than your feelings.

This week: For seven days, begin prayer by reading Hebrews 10:19–23. Draw near, confess honestly, thank Christ for access, and name one person you can encourage toward love and good works.
