FOUNDATIONAL BELIEF

Biblical Cosmology and the Created Order

Genesis places the earth and waters before the sun, moon, and stars. Throughout Scripture, heaven is above, the earth is beneath, the depths are below, and God establishes the created order by His Word. Watchman 33 refuses the claim that inspired writers merely repeated an ignorant and false view of creation.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

THE SHORT
AFFIRMATION.

We believe God’s inspired Word speaks truthfully about the heavens, the earth, and the order of creation, and that Scripture must judge human models rather than be corrected by them.

Begin with the order God revealed

Genesis begins with God creating the heaven and the earth. The earth and waters are present before God appoints the lights in the firmament on the fourth day. Light appears on the first day, the firmament divides waters on the second, dry land and vegetation appear on the third, and only then are the sun, moon, and stars appointed for signs, seasons, days, and years and to give light upon the earth.

That order matters. The biblical account does not begin with the sun producing the earth or making life possible before God speaks. The earth does not owe its existence or preservation to the sun; both earth and luminaries owe their existence and appointed functions to the Creator.

Scripture consistently presents heaven above, earth beneath, and the depths below

From the law through the prophets and into the New Testament, the Bible speaks in a stable vertical pattern. God is in heaven above; people live upon the earth beneath; the waters and depths are below; Christ descends from heaven, ascends into heaven, and will descend again; the dead are raised and living saints are caught up to meet Him.

This language is woven into history, worship, prophecy, doctrine, and the description of Christ’s ascension. It should not be dismissed by claiming that inspired writers were merely projecting a primitive misunderstanding. God chose these words as part of the revelation He gave.

The heavens are part of God’s ordered creation and future judgment

Scripture describes the firmament declaring God’s handiwork, waters above the heavens, lights placed in the firmament, and God’s throne above. It also foretells a coming shaking in which the sun and moon are darkened, stars fall, the powers of heaven are shaken, and heaven departs or is rolled together like a scroll.

Some of these passages use prophetic imagery, and their immediate context must be honored. Yet their shared witness remains important: the heavens are a created realm subject to God, not an endless and self-governing expanse beyond His revealed order. The coming signs will announce the visible intervention of the Creator and the return of Jesus Christ.

Let God be true when human models conflict with His Word

Because Scripture is inspired, human authority cannot be placed above it. Scientific theories, institutional claims, traditions, images, and educational consensus must all remain open to examination. A model that requires believers to treat the Bible’s sustained description of creation as ignorant falsehood has reversed the proper order of authority.

Biblical cosmology should be argued from the text with care rather than from slogans. Clear statements should govern the case; poetic, visionary, and apocalyptic passages should be read in context; and conclusions should be distinguished from claims the passage does not explicitly make. Careful interpretation does not weaken Scripture. It prevents us from attaching human speculation to the Word while still refusing to explain the Word away.

Earth and waters before the Day Four luminaries

Genesis gives an ordered creation account in which the earth and waters precede the appointment of the sun, moon, and stars, while every part of creation depends upon God’s command.

The firmament, waters above, and God’s ordered heavens

The creation account names the firmament and waters above; later Scripture continues to use that language in worship and prophetic visions of God’s throne.

Heaven above, earth beneath, and descent and ascent

The Bible repeatedly locates heaven above and earth beneath and describes Christ as descending from heaven, ascending again, and returning from heaven.

The earth established by God

Wisdom and worship texts describe God laying the earth’s foundations and establishing the world so that its order rests upon His decree rather than autonomous natural power.

Stars falling and the heavens being changed

The prophets, Jesus, Peter, and Revelation describe a future shaking and transformation of the heavens associated with divine judgment and Christ’s return.

READ WITH PRECISION

IMPORTANT
DISTINCTIONS.

These notes clarify what the affirmation means, what it does not claim, and where terminology can hide a material difference.

State clearly what is explicit and what is inferred

Genesis explicitly gives creation order; further conclusions about geometry or mechanics require an interpretive argument and should not be presented as the wording of a verse.

Poetry and prophecy remain inspired and must still be read in context

Recognizing poetic, visionary, or apocalyptic form does not permit dismissing the passage, but it does require attention to imagery and immediate context.

The issue is the authority of revelation

The foundational claim is not that every human cosmology argument is correct; it is that inspired Scripture does not become false whenever a human model disagrees with it.

The doctrine and its applications must be distinguished

This belief affirms the authority and truthfulness of Scripture’s testimony about creation. It does not treat every secondary inference about geometry or mechanics as though each conclusion were the explicit wording of a single verse.
