About this sermon

Dean Odle argues that Roman Catholic mysticism and ecumenical compromise have polluted parts of the Pentecostal and charismatic church. Beginning with revival history and the abuse scandal surrounding IHOP Kansas City founder Mike Bickle, he says spiritual movements must be judged by Scripture, doctrine, and moral fruit rather than reputation, prophecy, spectacle, or institutional success. He contrasts ministries centered on repentance and deliverance with practices he associates with Catholic contemplative mystics, repetitive prayer, visualization, and leaders who shield serious sin.

01
Through 12:57

Odle recalls Brownsville, Azusa Street, and the Welsh Revival as genuine movements that he believes were later damaged by occult or counterfeit spiritual influences. He urges leaders to guard revival through biblical discernment instead of tolerating every supernatural manifestation.

02
Through 25:54

He discusses allegations of long-term sexual abuse by IHOP founder Mike Bickle and argues that the scandal exposes deeper spiritual corruption. Pointing to Bickle’s promotion of Catholic mystics, Odle presents IHOP’s prayer and prophetic culture as counterfeit rather than a movement the church should preserve.

03
Through 38:51

Odle contrasts Argentine evangelists whose ministries emphasized repentance, deliverance, and conversion with his experience hearing Bickle in 1999. He recounts later attending an IHOP-related conference and says the absence of the Holy Spirit’s witness prompted him to investigate the movement’s teachings.

04
Through 51:48

Reading Isaiah 1–2, Odle says religious meetings, sacrifices, and prayers become offensive to God when joined to bloodshed, idolatry, and eastern spiritual practices. He connects soothsaying, repetitive prayer, and visualization with the contamination he previously documented in The Polluted Church.

05
Through 1:04:45

Odle reads Jeremiah Johnson’s dream portraying Bickle as a grieving pope whose scattered crown spreads intercession worldwide. He rejects the dream’s positive interpretation, arguing that the papal image signifies Catholic pollution and that exposure should end, not redistribute, IHOP’s influence.

06
Through 1:17:42

He warns that Christians must actively resist lust, repent quickly after failure, and never make peace with sexual immorality. He then traces alleged corruption through Bob Jones, Paul Cain, William Branham, and Jim Jones, presenting these associations as evidence of longstanding infiltration and counterfeit gifts.

07
Through 1:30:39

Odle identifies Revelation’s woman with Rome, citing the seven hills, purple and scarlet clerical colors, jeweled wealth, the golden chalice, and centuries of persecution. He treats these visual and historical parallels as evidence that the Roman Catholic institution is the prophetic mother of harlots.

08
Through 1:43:36

The sermon names Billy Graham, Benny Hinn, Bill Johnson, and Rick Joyner as examples of Protestant or charismatic leaders who, in Odle’s view, compromised with Rome. From 2 Corinthians 6 and 1 Corinthians 5, he argues that believers must separate from idolatry and professing Christians who persist in immorality.

09
Through 1:56:33

Odle says discernment grows through closeness to Jesus, the Holy Spirit, prayer, and careful comparison of teaching with Scripture. Using a controversial men’s-conference performance as an example, he argues that sexualized spectacle is predictable fruit when churches embrace New Age teachers or Roman Catholic ecumenism.

10
Through 2:09:30

He calls for IHOP’s influence to be ended rather than funded or rebranded and recalls New Testament leaders confronting named false teachers. The service closes in worship and prayer for a Christianity centered on Jesus’ lordship, Scripture, holiness, genuine spiritual gifts, and protection from wolves.

You're the Lord, go ahead and worship him.

  2. 0:04:38

Give him praise. Lord, we give you glory and praise this morning. Lord Jesus, we exalt you, King of Kings and Lord of Lords. We worship you today. God, we ask you to reveal yourself to people, Lord, that will be watching and listening all over the place. Those that are here. Holy Spirit, we ask you to continue to lead us and guide us into all truth as we dig into your word, Lord, as we try to navigate the crazy world that we live in and even the crazy church world that we live in. Lord, help us to navigate that and discern that minefield so that we don't fall prey to largest doctrines of demons and seducing spirits and even counterfeit miracles and supernatural manifestations. We don't want to counterfeit, Lord, we want the real. And we know, God, that you have the real to give us. And that's what we seek after. But we're not going to take a shortcut or we're not going to take a shortcut or and we're not going to compromise. We pray this that you give us the grace to not to not be polluted. Or we pray this in Jesus name. Amen. Amen. Hallelujah. You may be seen this morning. We welcome everyone to Fire and Grace Church. Those watching listening. Whoo. I don't know where this cold, rainy weather came from. I guess it came from up north. Some Yankee brought it down here, I guess. Tends to be what happens. Hallelujah. Yeah, exactly. Some crazy weather. I want everybody to turn again to Matthew twenty four. I got a lot to share with you this morning. You know, I always think about when we sing one of those songs from the Brownsville revival from Lindell Cooley. I always think about the time that I was there. You know, I started going the revival started on Father's Day of ninety five and I started going at about June or July of ninety six. I think it was somewhere in that time period, about a year after it had been going. Of course, the Internet was just, you know, still AOL dot com and dial up. So if you wanted to load the Web page for the Brownsville revival, you had to wait a while to cheat, right? It just took a minute. And so the news didn't spread real fast until, you know, I think someone from a friend of mine from Pensacola that lived down there brought me the the newspaper from down there and it was talking about the revival. And I was like, huh, I better go see this. And of course, I had heard about Steve Hill before that and actually had heard him preach in Montgomery at Evangel Temple Assembly of God in Montgomery and had his read his book of his testimony, Stone Cold Heart.

  3. 0:07:39

I knew he was a real man of God. And so anyway, long story short, a good friend of mine, Montgomery, he ended up going and becoming the children's pastor down at the Brownsville Assembly of God before the revival came. And I remember talking to him and how sick he was of the political, you know, crap within the assemblies of God at the time. And he said, I'm just hungry for revival. And, you know, so God moved him down there about year and a half, two years before the revival broke out. I can tell you this, I've been prayed for and I've met John Kilpatrick, Pastor John, who was the pastor of Brownsville Assembly of God. I've been prayed for by him, by Steve Hill, by Dr. Michael Brown, who was the president of the Brownsville Revival School of Ministry. I can tell you that God was moving in a real and powerful way, especially in the beginning. But like every revival in history, Satan always moves in and infiltrates, and he usually uses the same tactics. And he did it at the Azusa Street revival that started in 1906 that restored the Pentecostal movement again, the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of tongues, the gifts of healing, all the gifts of the spirit were stirred up in the power of God fell at Azusa Street. There's no question. But why did Azusa Street finally come to an end? Why do revivals come to an end? Well, we know from history now that the spiritist, the occultist came into the Azusa Street revival and began to operate in the counterfeit, demonic supernatural gifts. Can I tell you right now that the devil has his counterfeits. He has his counterfeit tongues. He has counterfeit healings. He has counterfeit words of knowledge or telling you things about yourself that no one should know. The devil can do all that. Now he can't do everything, of course, God can do, but he can do a lot of stuff. And the problem with the Pentecostal charismatic church world is that we have allowed these people to infiltrate our churches and we don't put them in check for the most part. And we discern them sometimes and still don't put them in check. And that was what was bad about the leaders that the Azusa Street revival discerned that some of these people were really witches, occultist enemies of Jesus Christ, enemies of the gospel coming in to pollute, to demonically contaminate God moving. And because the leaders did not stop it, purge those people out of it, it eventually derailed the whole thing.

  4. 0:10:40

And that's what happened when Azusa Street ended, it was a mess. I mean, it had been a sovereign, powerful move of God where all races met together. Think about that, blacks and whites together and worshiping together in a church in 1906, that was almost unheard of. I mean, it broke down the racial issues, it broke down all that nonsense because people were hungry for God and people were praying. And if you read Frank Bartleman's account, what an intercessor he was. And there were people who prayed like Seymour who led the revival, he prayed for five hours a day for God to move, he was so hungry for God to move. And then the Lord speaks to him and tells him you need to pray more. These were the kind of people, we're talking about holy people, we're talking about godly people who are hungry for God and God answered their prayers. But the same thing happened in the Welsh revival, 1904 to 1905, did God pour out his spirit and answer to a great season of intercession by Evan Roberts and the young people in Wales and in England at the time, God was moving among young people and there was a hunger for God and there was a hunger for the fullness and power of the Holy Spirit. And boy did God answer. I mean, when Evan Roberts, God gave him, he would spend time in prayer and fasting and studying the word from the time he was like 12 years old. And by the time he was in his early 20s, he was like God gave him a vision of 100,000 people being saved in Wales and he knew God was about to move. So he asked his pastor if they could start having some meetings. And I think the first meeting, 19 people showed up. But within six weeks, the Holy Spirit moved in such power, within six weeks, 10,000 people were saved. The church was filled, people were standing outside the windows and doors. The next six weeks passed, another 10,000 people were born again. We're talking about hardcore, unsaved people, truly converted, brought to repentance from their sins. And he said, but at that time, people were drinking and partying all the time. The cursing was so bad that the mules that they used in the coal mines, when everybody got saved in Wales, they had to retrain the mules because they only understood cuss words, right? God so transformed that area and it is true, within six months, 100,000 people were converted. And the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the services in Wales would go 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whether the leaders were there or not. And God was just moving and people, people would just let the Holy Spirit move. But guess what happened?
