[Music] foreign [Music] this is apologetics class five the divine inspiration of the Bible part four and today we're going to be talking about the text transmission and the reason we're going to talk about this and we'll talk about which text is because one of the things you face one of the questions you face from critics Skeptics and people who you know are unbelievers or uh doubters or whatever you want to say they'll be like well you know um how do you know you know where the text came from there's so many different Bibles one you know and they might even be smart enough to bring up well this verse and this Bible in the King James version says this verse this way and then this over here in the revised Standard Version says it this way and completely different or when you look at the message or you look at for instance like in the King James version First John 5 7 is there but if you look at the NIV it's not there so uh this is a valid question why is this why does this happen so uh this is something I've had this book right here this little book I bought I remember now I I had to go get it again because I bought it probably in 19 late 1987 or 88 but it's entitled let's weigh the evidence by Barry Burton a good little book to get it's really it really kind of shows you which way it goes it was copyright 1983 Barry D Burton b-u-r-t-o-n um but it's called let's weigh the evidence which Bible is the real word of God and this is more of a comparison it does tell you a little bit of the story that we're going to go through today I went and got it off the bookshelf this morning so I can compare some of the versions and show you some of the scriptures that are different in one Bible versus the other another good book you can get is um by Dr D a weight this is called defending the King James Bible a four-fold superiority he talks about the text the translators the technique the theology God's word kept intact in English um I bought this this is a hardback I bought this online for 11 bucks brand new still wrapped but Dr wait now he's a hardcore Baptist so we don't go to him for theology on like once they've always saved and the gifts of the holy spirit but he was he's a he's a multiple PhD in
language okay this guy knows uh he knows language he um he got his ba In classical Greek in Latin from the University of Michigan in 1948 and he got his Masters in theology in New Testament Greek literature from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1952 and he got a masters of arts in speech from Southern Methodist University in 1953 he got a doctor of theology with honors in Bible Exposition from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1955 in a PhD in speech from Purdue University in 1961. this guy knows speech he knows language and he knows Greek and the Hebrew but he also knows the history of the text transmission from the apostles concerning the New Testament and the old two this is almost a technical manual on um it's not like you know sit down and easy reading type thing all right so there's that and I'm going to look at two there's another book by Dr Ken Johnson that I'm going to just look at I didn't require you to get these books because I'm not going to go through the entire book but if you want them this is another book by Dr Ken Johnson called the ancient word of God so we'll we're going to get into that a little bit this morning but again you just need to know um where the Bible comes from now I'm just going to read a little bit of this here in the beginning of this book because he uh he goes through um you know some of the stuff we've already covered about God promised to preserve his word but I found some things interesting in here um irenaeus now we're gonna this is a quote from irenaeus one of the church fathers in ad 178 and this is what he said the doctrine of the Apostles has been guarded as a very complete system of Doctrine and has been preserved without any forging of scriptures uh neither receive addition to nor suffer curtailment from its truths read the word of God without falsification lawfully and diligently explaining the Old Testament in harmony with the rest of the scriptures or the New Testament this was irenaeus against heresies for 0.33 this was 80 78 so in 1878 all right irenaeus if you remember um you had John the Apostle John his disciple polycarp then polycarp discipled irenaeus and irenaeus does recount times that he met the Apostle John as well all right so right before the Apostle John died so irenaeus says here that the doctrine of the Apostles has been guarded a very complete system of Doctrine has been preserved without any forging of the scriptures now when he's talking about the
scriptures remember we even talked about it the other day that the 27 books of the New Testament by this time were well had been done for a long time that uh moratorium fragments that we found martinian fragment however it said remember talked about all the books there and uh and then the other ones are mentioned by other Church fathers so what they're saying is is this the scriptures the New Testament the gospels acts the Epistles of Paul the other Epistles of John the Revelation um that it was all intact and it was preserved and there were no forgeries all right that they that we had the word of God now this is A.D 178 when he says this all right so um we'll keep going here let's just keep reading this part see the ancient Church believed the Bible was inspired and perfect they were to carefully guard it from those who would tamper with the text so let's see how it all began so this is A.D 32 to 132 all right acts 11 teaches that Believers in the Messiah the Lord Jesus were first called Christians in Antioch this is important and that the prophets frequented Antioch in the early days now the last book of the Bible Revelation was written about 80 95 by the Apostle John when he had been banished to the island of Patmos for being a Christian in 1896 John was released from his prison returned to the city of Ephesus using it as a headquarters for missionary work John and polycarp continue to plant churches for the next 20 years meanwhile the scribes at Antioch continue to produce copies of the inspired writings of the Apostles they were eventually grouped together to form the New Testament so it was primarily in Antioch where the New Testament the Epistles the Gospels acts and then finally the book of Revelation and John and Peter's last Epistles were being copied and passed around to the church all right so Antioch now Mark and this is just church history I'm giving you here first I know I know remember I told you apologetics and and church history you're going to overlap there's just no way you're gonna have a little church history and apologetics but Mark took his gospel and set up the Christian church in Alexandria Egypt he was martyred there while the essenes of qumran were producing the Dead Sea Scrolls another essene Community developed in Egypt this is very important to remember the Egyptian essenes combined Judaism and paganism from them a rose occult card to therapeutic all right these therapeutic mixed the Pagan practices of the Egyptian essenes with Christianity they also mixed in and what a lot of people don't know and I have this in my book The polluted church is
that this group The therapeutic really mixed in as well with Christianity Buddhism because there were Buddhist monks as missionaries in Egypt as early as 300 BC maybe even earlier so the whole idea of having you know monks and celibacy and the rosary beads that come all of that comes from Buddhism the meditation the chanting the repetitive type prayers the visualization all of that stuff came from the Buddhist monks that went into Egypt and then These Guys these Egyptians that joined with them and then some people that would go out into the desert like the uh what they're called the desert fathers and they would go out into the desert to be Hermits basically and they picked up the practices of these things well these all of this is happening you know 250 you know on into you know 250 300 A.D and it was these guys who were thought to buy the people around to be very holy men right but they had they had a mixture they just had aspects of Christianity they mixed in with all this paganism that is what became the Roman Catholic Church from the beginning all right because the Romans and the people in the area all believe that these Egyptian Pagan seen people these therapeutic people that they were holy men and that's why the whole thing is where nuns come from nuns actually nuns come from the whole thing the Oracle of Delphi you might want to write that down you can look that up but the Oracle of Delphi was a well-known place of divination um it was usually one woman that was the Oracle she was the prophetess of the god Apollo and um she would basically go down in this cave and they said there was a gas coming up from the ground and basically she was getting high on some type of gas that was coming up out of the ground but she would prophesy and she was definitely demon possessed but there would be a group of virgins around her that would be dedicated to the oracle that one of them would then they all would train under her and then when she the Oracle passed away there would be another one take um her place and there was a stream there and they talked about the stream if you came and got water from the stream that that was holy water that's where that came from all this stuff that's in the Roman Catholic Church came from paganism and Witchcraft and occultism I can just tell you holy water the nuns they called them nuns actually The Virgins around there the if you remember in Acts 16 remember the woman possessed with a spirit of divination um a lot of people think that that word divination there is python but it's not it's pythian and that and it's talking
about she was one of the trainees of the Oracle she was that's why she was possessed with the spirit of divination and Paul knew that and uh acts 16 right acts 16 when she was following Paul around Paul and Silas and said these men are Servants of the most I God show us the way of Salvation and finally Paul being grieved to turn and commanded the spirit of divination to leave her and so it would stop basically so it stopped harassing him and his ministry so what I'm getting at is I want you to understand that this is where you and the Oracle goes back you know it goes back into ancient Greece we're talking about into BC time period and like uh Greek leaders and and Generals and things would go to her for prophecies and about battles and about wars and stuff and she would give them accurate words but that basically it's just she was the Oracle of Delphi was just the Pagan Prophet but of the time but they were just going through that you had all this going on in this area so there was plenty of this going on so um this the group this therapeutic mixed the Pagan practices of the Egyptians with Christianity and then many other Gnostic Cults arose after them Cults like the incredites the ibionites we've talked about them the marcionites all created their own scriptures by cutting out parts of the true New Testament they did not like okay this is so see that you think about all this this was this was first century end of the first century early second Century A.D and you already have these occult groups mixing Christianity in and then taking the Bible that was already established and creating their own their own Bible by cutting stuff out so this is why I'm going to just tell you why we have two lines of textual transmission you have the the line that God promised to preserve from Antioch we're going to talk about that today and then you're going to have an alexandrian or an Egyptian line that was corrupted and recreated by these people getting into the occult and these people who were into mixtures of Christianity and gnosticism and Judaism and a little you know a little bit of Kabbalah and everything else mixed in there and Buddhism and Hinduism and and you know I mean I can show you you know just just just think about this the rosary beads in the Roman Catholic Church came from Buddhism Buddhism they were using rosary beads as as early as 1500 BC all right there's nowhere you you show me in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation Rosary Beats doesn't exist all right but the Roman Catholic Church adopted it all right and that's just one thing I
mean they adopted the the Virgin thing the holy water celibate priest monks all of that stuff came from occultism all right none of that's biblical um and and so these groups like The ebionites the ones who were basically the Torah terrorists um of that time who rejected the Council of Jerusalem we talked about them but the these guys the marcionites uh uh and these Gnostic cults they primarily cut out references to the deity of Jesus Christ that he is God In the Flesh now that is important to remember this morning as we go through this because what you're going to see is we even get to the late 1800s and by two guys named Wescott and Hort who created a new Greek uh New Testament for everybody that's what they attacked that's what they cut out references to Jesus being God In the Flesh particularly references to the Virgin birth they attacked they they didn't believe in hell we're going to see that and so your your modern versions were put together by guys who came in and made their own edited Greek texts in the New Testament that's the NIV the the revised standard the American Standard pretty much every modern version except for the King James the new King James and a few others we'll talk about but um that's why I say I'm I'm not a King James only I'm just really I want the right text so if it comes down to it and this is pretty much the only one that's got the uncorrupted text guess what that's the one I want so uh let's just keep going here so we go to 80 132 to 200. now these you're going to have to take you take your notes on or go back and listen I know you can go back and listen and I do have a PowerPoint this morning we're going to get through this but I want to read some of this here but she says here in the second century missionaries from Antioch took the Greek New Testament to various countries and helped those people translate Bibles into their own languages uh speaking of the gift of languages or tongues which started on the day of Pentecost ancient Church records state that according to the tongue every one of them had received so that they prepare himself to go to that country in which that tongue was spoken and that's ancient Church fathers page 173. of course like one of the examples is that they say uh Barnabas went to India and took the gospel of Matthew very early on to India and translated it for them in India um anyway says when irenaeus became Bishop of Leon France uh uh what was that ad 177 the previous bishop what is it positiveness 87 177 had already given the people the New Testament in their local language the Gaelic Bible several other ethnic groups
have similar Legends the missionaries taught the local people and helped them translate the pure Greek New Testament into Syriac old Latin sahitic boharic Coptic Italian Gaelic goth Armenian Palestinians Syriac and others by the mid 3rd Century the gnostics were stamped out everywhere but Egypt which was the last Gnostic stronghold a Christian named pantanus started a school seminary in Alexandria Egypt after a Time pantiness decided to resign as the head of the alexandrian school and move to the mountains Clement of Alexandria was elected the new head of the school but he felt uneasy about certain things he saw in the school why he saw the Gnostic and the therapeutic paganism and stuff in the school so he decided to find pantanus and ask him some questions claim it finally found Pantene is living in a cave up in the mountains so what was he doing he'd become one of these desert fathers one of these hermit meditators you know holy men um and says during uh but it says Panthers reassured Clement that nothing was wrong so Clement took control of the school during this time at the school in Alexandria he wrote much commentary his quotes of scripture often resemble the alexandrian text now we're going to also the alexandrian text is also going to be called the critical text so when you hear the term alexandrian takes critical texts but anyway so the quotes he you begin to hear from Egypt are from this alexandrian text the received text as we're going to call it or the Texas receptus that the King James and what we believe is the you know the uncorrupted transmission um he gives an example here he says the receive text he says for example in quoting John 1 18 he called Jesus the only begotten of God rather than the only begotten son Clement also seems to teach a kind of preterism by linking some of the Revelation prophecies with the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem this would be a common Gnostic idea since gnostics hated anything Jewish and thought that the god of the Old Testament was a corrupt tyrant so um what what he's pointing out here is that very early on in Alexandria Egypt there was a school a seminary School of Christianity that became very corrupt in its beliefs um and as you see we moved to 8200 to 325 and origen replaced Clement Clement as the head of the school of Alexandria now origin seemed to be a great scholar but in time he was charged with teaching heresy
um he left the school and came to reside in caesarea under his Direction copies of the alexandrian scripture which he had brought with him from Egypt were mingled with the standard Byzantine New Testament again when we say the word Byzantine we're talking about the original received text the you know the uh Antioch and Syrian takes the the true text so there's several names I don't want you to get and so that's it's like for instance you have the the alexandrian Texas also called the Caesarean text and it's called the critical text later on but you if you hear the term Byzantine receive text um I think one of them's majority text is one of the the terms you'll hear it's important to understand those terms because I think a lot of times they have these multiple terms to confuse people all right but um anyway uh origin he he was quite a heretic he he taught reincarnation he taught against the deity of Jesus he taught against the Virgin birth I mean this guy was not a Christian Leader by any means he claimed to be Christian but he was really agnostic heretic right so he created he he mixed in some of this this corrupted text all right he was part of the problem um of course he goes on your own by 8325 Constantine was on the throne and Christianity became the official religion well not really Christianity Roman Catholic that Christianity that was already is it already been perverted the church the the early church fathers had already been rebuking the church at Rome as it was as it was going down this road of heresy and they didn't listen so Constantine comes in and says you know we're going to stop the persecution and we're going to make Christianity the official church but really the official church was the Roman Church that was already corrupted infiltrated and poisoned by all this occultism and compromise um but now this is not to say listen this is not to say and I want to make this statement clear that's not to say that God didn't end up using some Roman Catholics in the process of things I mean if we remember correctly Martin Luther was Roman Catholic and came out of that and you know rebuked and corrected a lot of their you know exposed a lot of their errors so there were some Catholics that were good people that God I believe used to try to you know help people and he also used in the process of of doing things um so again it's one of those we were talking about it before class we're not going to say all or bad not you know um we got to be careful about that uh but anyway Constantine made Christianity official religion and we're
going to talk more about Constantine and Roman Catholicism the days ahead in church history but these proceedings were recorded by eusebius known as the father of church history Constantine ordered 50 Bibles to be created for the provinces and it is thought that the Codex sinaiticus was one of those Bibles so if this is true that would explain how the Latin Bibles became corrupt and you're going to hear about the synaticus and the um the vaticanus now those are two corrupted versions of the Bible that the Roman Catholic Church uses all right now in 325 to 400 A.D Jerome was asked to create a modern version of the Bible in the common language of the people he agreed and produced the Latin Vulgate Jerome strongly recommended the that the Apocrypha be left out because it was not in the Hebrew version and the Greek version that had that it had it seemed corrupted he said and he also stated the Greek version had removed first John 5 7-8 he strongly opposed removing these verses from The Vulgate so we moved to 400 to 1384 A.D during this period of common people were discouraged from and finally forbidden to read the word of God for themselves the Latin Vulgate became more and more corrupt as did the Roman Catholic Church people begin to rise up to reform the Catholic church and most were martyred for their stand so between 1384 and 1611 we have John Wycliffe stepping on the scene in in 1384 Wycliffe published his Wycliffe Bible based on the Latin Vulgate it was a good start towards getting the Bible in the hands of the people in their own native language he died for his service as more freedom was gained other scriptures more of the Old Reliable Greek scriptures in the ancient Bibles translated from the original Greek into various language these men labored hard to translate the pure word of God is received from the apostles and Prophets into the language of the common people now you have renowned Greek scholar Erasmus took the best of the Greek manuscripts of his day about 12 and all and traveled all over Europe examining the other ancient Greek manuscripts and fragments he had other Scholars check other Greek old Latin Vulgate and manuscripts written in other languages so in 1521 Erasmus contacted um some a man named bombasius in the Vatican who supplied him with readings from the vaticanus showing that it did not contain John 4 1-3 I wonder why it talks about testing the spirits [Laughter] well the Vatican or first John 5 7 the Codex vaticanus was discovered in the Vatican library in 1481 in 1533
Erasmus contacted another acquaintance in the Vatican who cross-checked Erasmus New Testament with the Vulgate and with the Codex vaticanus this friend supplied him with a list of 365 points of difference Erasmus decided that since the vaticanus agreed so much with the Vulgate it was hopelessly corrupt and rejected it entirely in 1522 the Third Edition of Erasmus Greek text was published it included first John 5 7 and 8. and there you have it you have a guy named we're going to go over this again so we're going to cover this kind of where I'm kind of giving you an overview and then we're going to recover some of these people so you had stephanus a printer from Paris took Erasmus text and made some changes in punctuation typeset Etc published his official receive text in 1550 in Geneva in 1560 the Geneva Bible was published based on the stephanus received text the King James Bible is based on the received text was published in 1611. um there's been you know again some you know some updating um you're gonna see about a guy named zissendorff here not the same guy I was talking about but another zizendorf discovered the Kodak syndicatus at a monastery and a trash can and in 1881 a team led by Wescott and Hort started their revision based on the synocatus and the vaticanus and through the last century Moore alexandrian type fragments were found the critical text was developed the critical text is the alexandrian the corrupted text it's eclectic or constantly changing it's gone through 27 revisions in the last century the current edition is called the na27 and then we're going to talk about the the critical text or the alexandrian text more in a minute I just want to say conclusion we've learned from what the Bible itself says about its own inspiration and preservation we've learned the history of the Bible and its manuscripts and translations over the past 2000 years at this point we need to look briefly at the major English Bibles and use three Old Testament verses and for New Testament verses to see how they hold up and then he goes into what we're not going to cover today is how they change certain specific prophecies that they didn't like all right so let's start on on this now as we go through this today of course we've covered these scriptures here but in the original manuscripts every word of of scripture was given by inspiration of God so as to produce a Bible completely without error so this is a verse it was on your first apologetics test and everybody better get this verse down in them here this one's you need to you need to learn you need to memorize all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for Doctrine for reproof for correction for instruction righteousness that the
man of God may be perfect thoroughly furnished unto all good works we also I also gave you this the other day this word Theo news nutos anustos which means god breathed knowing this first that no Prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation for the prophecy came not in Old Time by the will of man but holy man of God's spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost second Peter 1 22 both of these were on your last test and sadly most everybody missed part of this these two verses these are important verses here you need to know them all right now let's keep going here there's more textual evidence for the Greek New Testament than any other piece of ancient literature we've covered that even ten pieces and I've shared with you how uh the best attested piece of secular literature is Homer's Iliad there are 643 surviving copies of Homer's Iliad the oldest being copied 500 years after the original documents there are over 5 300 copies of manuscripts of the Greek New Testament or portions thereof the oldest dating only to 150 to 200 years after the originals there are over 18 000 other witnesses to the text of the New Testament such as translation lectionaries quotations so when you put those together you get about twenty four thousand uh somewhere in that range as manuscripts of the Greek New Testament have come to light over the years they've been analyzed and categorized as belonging to either one of two families either the alexandrian type text or the Byzantine receive texts this is really I mean when you you check any text any Bible any fragment you're going to find it came from one or the other so we have two transmission lines here it says here's some of the most early manuscripts uncovered in the 19th century belonged to the alexandrian family because they have roots in Alexandria now the reason they make that point is because some of the people now say well you should take these earlier attacks no not if they're corrupt tax you see what I'm saying we can tell because we have we have other texts that show where the changes were made and we have early church fathers who were quoting from the uh Byzantine or received texts in the late you know first century early second century and into the second century so we know which ones they looked at you know I'm talking about the true Christians the true church fathers of that time all right it says however right remember some of the earliest ones are that we have are alexandrian but the vast majority of the manuscripts of the Greek New Testament belong to the Byzantine type text or the received text because they agree with the text commonly used by the Greek speaking churches between 90 to 95 percent of the known Greek New Testament manuscripts are of this type now think about this if
you have 90 to 95 percent of the Greek New Testament manuscripts are the Byzantine text why would you use why would you say the few we have from Alexandria trumps those and we're going to change what your Bible says why would you do that you'd have you have an agenda that's one right um the Byzantine or receive text we're more widely distributed and accepted than those of the alexandrian type which were used primarily in Egypt the Byzantine or majority text or received text predominated during the greatest period of manual copying of the Greek New Testament manuscripts ad350 to 80 1516 it was the dominant text used by the Greek speaking communities this was the dominant text up through from from Antioch and up through um you know the churches in in Greece in Athens and so forth so you only had this problem down around Egypt right until origen brought it up into caesarea okay this is why it's important to know history early translations of the New Testament into other languages show evidence of it being translated from the Byzantine type text right so we see the early translations in other languages was using the receive text or the Byzantine text or the majority taxes we call it not the alexandrian text the critical text all right um among these are the Syriac the bruschetta the Palestinian Syriac version The Armenian version the gothic version so we believe I believe from my years of studying this and this church right here we believe the Byzantine majority Greek text is closest to the original manuscripts of the Greek New Testament all right we have history we have manuscript evidence and we have translations that were in in quotes again for a couple of centuries all right so that's why we know it's it's and that's why I'm bringing this up in apologetics class you need to know this you need to know where your Bible came from and how you got this book the Old Testament and the New Testament and it was you know one the Old Testament was in a different time the New Testament came in a much later time and you need to know how it came down to us it's important um because people have these questions right how do you know well you can't say you know unless you've actually looked at this stuff right it says these translations were based on the textus receptus all right so let's look at this in February 1516 the Dutch humanist scholar Erasmus produced in
addition to the Greek New Testament he had at his disposal six Greek manuscripts belonging to the Byzantine type text he also used the Latin Vulgate to supplement missing portions of his manuscripts as more manuscripts became available subsequent revisions of Erasmus work were made the most scholarly being that of Robert Stevens or as I remember in French class that's pronounced 18 all right but anyway the most scholarly revision of Erasmus work or updating it um in 1550 was done by this Robert ATN or Robert Stevens this is the Greek text from which the King James version was translated in 1624 the Elsa Brothers printed an updated edition of the same text and their preface they indicated that this is the text which has been commonly received the name Texas receptus was then commonly applied not only to their edition of the Greek New Testament but those which preceded it beginning with the work of Erasmus so uh let's again a little history we're following on down here all right so the Byzantine majority form of the text provided the basis for almost all translations of the New Testament into modern languages down to the 19th century so so the text the receive text the majority tax the Byzantine tax was used by Martin Luther to translate into German by Tyndale into English in 1525 by Miles Cloverdale English 1535 the great Bible in English 1539 the Geneva Bible by Visa which was Calvin's assistant 1560 the Bishops Bible English 1568 and then finally the King James version English 1611 and then the revisions of the King James was just to update the changes in the English language because if you look at it original 16 11 King James Bible you'll be like what is that language it was so it looks so different I mean you can make out some of the words but it was so different so you had the King James has been revised 16 29 1638 1762 and the version we now have 1769 again just cleaning up the language now a lot of people claim like the the new King James was just another cleaning up of the language no they actually mixed in some of the corrupted texts when they translated the new King James so I don't even like recommending the new King James to people I will but I've read it and I and I'll come across a verse and I'll be wait a minute that's not what this verse is in the original King James Bible but just to let you know so it's not again does this look like we're talking about King James only no we're talking about I want a Bible that came from the Byzantine text that's what I want right because it is clearly we can trace
it back to the uncorrupted and so that's why it's important to me now the alexandrian text of West God and Horton boy these were two Devils we're going to talk about them pretty extensively today but this is just a little introduction in the 19th century and when we say 19th century we're talking about into the mid to late 1800s uh you'll see two English Scholars BF Wescott and fja hort published a critical edition of the Greek New Testament based primarily on three Greek manuscripts dating back to the 4th Century they based their translation on the vaticanus and the synocatus and the alexandrina alexandrinus or whatever you say that they're overriding majority premise was that the oldest manuscripts must be the best manuscripts but this was just a trick it was like oh the oldest ones are better no they're different they came from a different Source a different place right the parchment codices B vaticanus and Olive syndicatis were assigned to the fourth century and generally understood had been produced in Egypt along with the third manuscript the alexandrinus in the gospels alone these first two manuscripts differ from each other over well over 3 000 times which number does not include minor errors of spelling so he's saying it's not we're not even counting minor issues these are three thousand major differences right so we already this is a problem here right the United Bible society's Greek texts based on Westcott and hort's work varies from the Byzantine or the majority or the received text in over 6 000 places now let me ask you something if you change something is it the same no you don't get to change something three thousand six thousand times and it Remains the Same in fact what were they talking about you're going to see some of your books in the Bible if you take the King James version and you take the the NIV we're talking about books of the Bible that are missing thousand words three thousand words now I don't know about you but if I give you a sentence with 10 words in it and then I take five words out of it is it the same sentence no you're going to be missing a lot right well they did a lot of that and you know they say well why did some of these why did some of these corrupt texts survive well the best explanation for their survival of these parchments is that they were set aside because it was recognized that they had been corrupted or you had corrupt people set them aside and go you know we want to this is what we believe and we want to perpetuate this so again it's not hard to
figure out why some of them survived factors leading to a Corruption of some of the Greek texts is just like localized text types this is during the persecution of Christians prior to the time of Constantine copying of the New Testament Greek manuscripts would have been localized as Christians sought to keep a low profile copious errors would have been perpetuated in what may be called localized text types after Christianity was sanctioned under Constantine 83 13 improved communication between your churches led to cross-correction of localized text types faulty manuscripts would have been corrupted and laid aside it's being corrupted gradually localized railings readings would have been weeded out in the text which most closely followed the originals would be restored so you have that keep rocking on here all right um the Egyptian alexandrian influence here so a number of early manuscripts and fragments have been found in the region of around Alexandria and Egypt this is due in part to the climate conditions favorable for the preservation of papri on which they were written during the first and second centuries Egypt was the center for the Gnostic heresy the church historian eusebius records the claim of an unknown writer that the gnostics tampered with the scriptures without fear so Erasmus I mean eusebus the father of church history wrote about how they uh the the gnostics would tamper with the scriptures without fear the church in Egypt had a long record of being influenced by various schools of philosophy the brilliant alexandrian philosopher origin who lived 185 to 245 A.D believed that Christ was born of the father before All Creatures was a second God and a creature uh the 4th Century heretic Arias developed histology from origin and taught that Christ was the highest of created beings so these guys were complete Heretics all right An Origin had his part in perpetuating these Gnostic these corrupted Gnostic texts now again anybody should know this history Wescott and Hort knew this history there's no way they did what they did out of ignorance okay so just understand that why do you think the warnings are in the Bible is both in the Book of Proverbs and in the Book of Revelation it says don't add to anything in this book don't take away from anything in this book pretty important these guys right here I'm telling you they're burning in hell right now because their names were taken out of the book of life even if it was in it at one point the Bible says if you take from these things that are written your name will be taken out of the book of life well if your name's not in the book of life you're burning in hell so I can
say that beyond a shadow about these two guys they're burning right now wishing they hadn't messed with God's word all right if the alexandrian west garden horse text is correct the correct Greek New Testament this is what it means so if they if their translation and their text is right here's what it means it means the family of Greek New Testament texts which prefers readings that tend to diminish uh which which these means that the family of Greek New Testament takes their prefers readings that tend to diminish the person and work of Christ is correct so when they they take out like when they say God Is manifested In the Flesh they change first Timothy for instance First Timothy 3 16 God was manifested in the flesh you look it up in the original Greek it's the word Theos God right what's gotten hard they didn't want you believing Jesus was God so what'd they do change it to heat that's the that's not the word that's in the Greek text but they changed it and that's what's in your NIV and RSV and all those other V's right it means that 90 to 95 of the extant Greek New Testament manuscripts which belong to the Byzantine family or the majority text are wrong so these guys that come along and have to say you know what 90 to 95 percent of our Greek texts are wrong listen to us now what does that sound like but we have listen we have famous Christians and theologians to this day that defend these two characters all right let's keep going it means that the proper text of the Greek New Testament uh was preserved by professing Christians in an area where the church was known to be blending Greek philosophy with Christian thoughts so we would want you know why would you choose a place known for heresy over a place known for the truth right today they'd be like all right we're gonna you know we're not gonna go to a Protestant church for the truth we're going to go to Rome for the truth no no not a good idea and of course it means here if if West gotten hurts correct it means god did not allow his people to have the proper Bible until the 19th century a period of almost 1500 years This is highly unlikely in view of God's promise to refer preserve his word so basically what Scott Horton said you know what you guys didn't really have the right text for all that you know until the 19th century no gentlemen you're a bunch of deceivers Heretics and I believe they were Roman Catholic plants and I I won't have time to get into all that but it's pretty clear that they favored Roman Catholic heresy so let's get a well that picture is kind of blurry there but there you go West cotton heart you'll see them anyway you can look them up now I pulled up the Wikipedia thing because I wanted you to see it actually admits a couple of things here all right in Wikipedia here uh the New Testament and original Greek is a Greek language version of the New Testament published in 1881
it is also known as the Westcott and Hort text after its editors Brooke Foss Westcott and Fenton John Anthony hort textual Scholars used the abbreviation wh it is a critical tax compiled from some of the oldest New Testament fragments and texts that have been discovered at the time the two editors worked together for 28 years I'm not going to read their quote because this is this is just a PR from them but if you skip down to the third paragraph according to Hort knowledge of the documents should proceed final judgments upon readings the two editors favored two manuscripts the vaticanus and sinaiticus so even the Wikipedia article admits that they favored the text the Vatican likes not a good sign let's take the text the Vatican likes and ignore the 90 to 95 percent of the other texts that the early church used that was that was what was presented again how any modern Christian knowing any of this can say these these guys were good guys it's ridiculous now we're going to go through some of this book yep's understandable history of the Bible Samuel C Gip doctor of theology here check Publications book which I think also that book lets away the evidence that I had a minute ago it's right here is the Chick Publications book I don't know if you know the old man Jack Chick died so I don't know if his children still a lot of they they do it away with a lot of the good stuff from Chick Publications so you may or may not find it from them but anyway we're going to talk about West cotton Horton some of what they did here and it's important you can get this book most it's actually free online here you can look this up but a Monumental switch Westcott and Hort were responsible for the greatest feat and textual criticism they were responsible for replacing the universal text that's another way of saying the receive tax the majority tax the Byzantine tax so you see so many names for this but the universal text of the authorized version or the King James version so we know he's talking about the receive text the Byzantine tags he says they were responsible for replacing the universal text the received text of the authorized version with the local text of Egypt and the Roman Catholic Church uh both Wescott and Hort were known to have resented the preeminence given to the authorized version or the King James version and its underlying Greek text they had been deceived into believing that the Roman Catholic manuscripts vaticanus and aleph or the cynicatis were better because they were older this they believed even though horde admitted that the antiochan the the Byzantine or the universal text
was equal in Antiquity so they even acknowledged that the text that they didn't want the received text was just as old as their beloved Egyptian alexandrian text the fundamental text of the late extant Greek manuscripts generally is beyond all question identical with the dominant antiochan and Graco Syrian texts of the second half of the fourth century in spite of the fact that the readings of the universal text the received texts the Byzantine text were found to be as old or older West God and hearts still sought to dislodge it from its place of high standing in Biblical history Hort occasionally let his emotions show he said I had no idea until the last few weeks of the importance of text having read so Little Greek Greek Testament and dragged on with the villainous textous receptors he called it the villainous Texas reset tell me you didn't have a bias already right think of the vile Texas receptus leaning entirely on on late manuscripts it is a blessing that there are such early ones so he's sitting here saying guess what I hate the Texas receptors even though I believe it's just as old as the others I just prefer the corrupted Alexandria takes you're going to find out why they pervert it all right Wescott and Hort built their own Greek text based on primarily on a few unical or however you say that manuscripts of the local texts it had been stated earlier which of course came from those you know I didn't even know how you say it or whatever I don't know how to but they were a type of the way uh what's his name origin did it but it's been stated earlier that these were perverted manuscripts and they do not even agree among themselves the ironic thing is that West Scott and Horton knew this when they formed the text bergon and you're going to hear this Bergen Dean bergon he was a man of God and he was a theologian and he was he walked in the truth and he lived at the same time as these guys and he gave them you know what I mean he resisted them but he exposed Dr hort's confession even Hort had occasion to notice an instance of the concordia's discourse commenting on the four places in Mark's gospel where the Cox crowing as mentioned said the confusion of attestation introduced by these several cross-currents of change is so great that of the seven principal manuscripts Olive a b c d l no two have the same text in all four places so bergon exposed that Hort admitted that the text they were using the the vaticanus and the sinaiticus
were didn't even agree with themselves right that there was just massive confusion so let me say if you've got seven different if you're looking at two texts you got seven different things the way it's laid out what do you have to do you just arbitrarily pick something which is what they did and they usually picked what suited them these men lend their influence to a family manuscripts which have a history of attacking and deluding the major doctrines of the Bible this should not come as a surprise oddly enough neither man believed the Bible that the Bible that the Bible should be treated any different than the writings of lost historians or philosophers here Hort wrote for ourselves we dare not introduce considerations which could not reasonably be applied to other ancient texts supposing to them to have documentary attestation of equal amount variety Antiquity so what he's saying there is we don't really see these the New Testament manuscripts has any more important than any other historical writings or documents do you think that would be said by a true Christian no he also states that in the New Testament as in almost all prose writings which have been copied Corruptions by interpolation are many times more numerous than Corruptions by Omission so he's saying the New Testament was just prose writings it's been corrupted just by a man's you know it's in the the writer of this book says we must consider these things for a moment how can God use men who do not believe that his book is any different than Shakespeare Plato or Dickens it's a fundamental belief that the Bible is different from all other writings why did these men not believe it so and these are very well documented quotes from them from their books and their writings I mean these are not just hearsay their skepticism in fact goes deeper they have both become famous for being able to deny scriptural truth and still be upheld by fundamental Christianity as biblical authorities both Wescott and hortfeld to accept the basic Bible doctrines which we hold so dear and vital to our fundamental Faith Hort denies the reality of Eden he says I'm inclined to think that no such state is Eden I mean the popular notion ever existed in that Adam's fault in no degree differed from the fall of each of his descendants as cholerage justly argue so he didn't even believe that Genesis was literal oh and we see another problem arising here I'm telling you many seminaries who trained many of the preachers of this day this is what they believe they agree with these guys which is why they use their Bible translation because they're not ignorant of this furthermore he took sides with apostate
authors of essays and reviews Hort rights to Reverend Roland Williams October 21st 1858 further I agree with them authors of essays and reviews in condemning many leading specific doctrines of the popular theology evangelicals seemed to me perverted rather than untrue they are I fear still more serious differences between us on the subject of authority and especially the authority of the Bible oh evangelicals are perverted because they believe the authority of the Bible we don't we must also confront Court's disbelief that the Bible was infallible he said if you make a decided conviction of the absolute infallibility of the New Testament practically scientan for cooperation I fear I could not join you he also stated as I was writing the last words a note came from Wescott he too mentions having had fears which he now pronounces groundless on the strength of our last conversation in which he discovered that I did not recognize the providente in biblical writings he didn't recognize the Providence of God in the biblical writings the inspiration of scripture and further commented to a colleague but I am not able to go as far as you in asserting the absolute infallibility of canonical writing so they didn't believe the Bible was the inspired infallible word of God yet these men were used to create a new translation of the Greek New Testament to be used to make new Bibles from though unimpressed with the evangelicals of his day Hort had a great admiration for Charles Darwin to his colleague B.F Westcott he wrote excitedly have you read Darwin how I should like to talk with you about it in spite of difficulties I am inclined to think it unanswerable in any case it is a treat to read such a book and to John Ellerton he writes but the book which has most engaged me is Darwin not the Bible Darwin whatever made me thought of it it is a book that one is proud to be contemporary with my feeling is strong that the theory is unanswerable and if so it opens up a new period Dr Hort was also an adherent to the teachings of Samuel Taylor Coleridge his son writes in undergraduate days if not before he came under the spell of cholerage so horse son admits he was under the spell of this man named Coleridge well that's important Coleridge was a College Dropout whose drug addiction is a historical fact the Opium habit begun earlier to deaden the pain of his rheumatism and grew stronger after vaguely trying Malta and Italy to break away from opium coloridge
came back to England in 1806 one of College's famous works aids to reflection its chief aim is to harmonize formal Christianity with College's a variety of transcendental philosophy he also did much to introduce Emmanuel Kant and other German philosophers to English readers so this guy was trying to mix Christianity and transcendental you know occultism basically into and that's who Wescott and Hort loved and any of you find out we find out you look just look at these guys you find that they love going to seances and these guys were the worst man and and they're upheld today bye Christian Academia in the west as great Scholars no Heretics concerning the existence of the devil Hort writes the discussion which immediately precedes these four lines naturally leads to another Enigma most intimately connected with that of everlasting penalties namely that of the personality of the devil it was colourage who some three years ago first raised any doubts in my mind on the subject Dallas which have never yet been at all said at rest one way or the other you yourself are very cautious in your language so he's saying this guy college has put doubts in my head where there's a real devil that's what he's saying now if there be a devil he said he cannot merely bear a corrupted and marred image of God he must be holy evil his name evil his uh every energy and act evil would it not be a violation of the Divine attributes for the word to be actively supports such a nature as that Reverend horde also shrunk from the belief in a literal or eternal hell I think Maurice's letter to me sufficiently showed that we have no sure knowledge respecting the duration of future punishment and that the word Eternal has a far higher meaning than merely a material one of excessively long duration Extinction always grates against my mind is something impossible so he didn't believe in a literal eternal hell and I mean it's it's the Bill Clinton depends on what the definition of is is eternal doesn't mean that it has a higher meaning no it means what it says Eternal means Eternal but this is where these guys went I'm just showing you some of what they believed right he believed in but yet now he didn't believe in hell but he believed in purgatory where did that come from Catholicism that's what I'm saying I I'm not going to go through this whole thing because you guys can like I said this book's online you can go read it but you go down the list and where he will deny a Biblical Doctrine he'll Embrace a false Roman Catholic Doctrine even of idols and um worshiping Mary and all kinds of stuff the these guys had to be Jesuit plants all right
and so I'm not going to read all that he believed in purgatory oh yeah he believed that baptism if anything saved you it was baptism right here's some problems with West car we were in Hort there again unfortunately for the new Bible supporters Dr westcott's credentials are even more anti-biblical Wes Wescott did not believe that Genesis 1 through 3 should be taken literally he also thought that Moses and David were poetic characters whom Jesus Christ referred to by name only because the Common People accepted them as authentic I mean pretty wild and there's the quote where he says it so I mean we're dealing with guys that were complete they don't believe they don't believe in this is what's amazing here Westcott Westcott believed that the second coming of Jesus was not a physical coming but a spiritual coming you know who believed that new agers I mean this is this is where he goes he said as far as I can remember I said very shortly what I I hold to be the Lord's coming in my little book on the historic faith I hold very strongly that the fall of Jerusalem was the coming which first fulfilled the Lord's words so that's preterism and you know who pushed preterism first who started the doctrine of preterism which is a faulty end time belief was the Jesuits so that you wouldn't look at the Catholic Church as part of the end time Beast so they created preterism which said everything happened the second coming of Jesus was 70 A.D this is a huh yes I'm not joking I have a Blog Talk if y'all want to know about preterism I have a whole two-hour teaching on one of our Blog Talk Radio shows on preterism but that's what he's pushing here a Roman Catholic doctrine of preterism again so you don't look at Revelation as pointing at the Roman Catholic Church as the great of mystery Babylon so you look and and so you don't look for a real second coming of Jesus either he's already come and that was already fulfilled in 70 A.D there are people still believe this to this day my wife's uh brother believes this the one that goes to the teachers at Georgia Tech he believes it's nonsense anyway he didn't believe uh Westcott didn't believe in Heaven either listen to this sounds like some of the songs you hear huh well Scots have weight the fundamental Doctrine this fundamental Doctrine is not the last one to be denied by Bishop Westcott for he believed heaven to be a state and not a literal Place note the following quotations from Bishop Westcott no doubt the language of the rubric is unguarded but it saves us from the era of connecting the presence of Christ's glorified Humanity with Place Heaven is a state not a place
you hear this he says yet the Unseen is the largest part of life heaven lies about us now in infancy Alone by Swift Silent pauses for thought for recollection for aspiration we can not only keep fresh the influence of that Divine or atmosphere but breathe it more habitually this is the contemplative mysticism about finding a state of meditation where you find Heaven here that heaven is not a real literal place he said we may reasonably Hope by patient Resolute faithful United Endeavor to find Heaven about us here the glory of our Earthly life Dr Wescott was also deeply devoted to John Newman the Roman Catholic Defector I mean it's just it just goes on and on and on these guys the the the heretical nonsense that they believed but we could just I mean literally I only just pulled a few of their beliefs now for you the that's the insanity of course they attacked the Virgin birth I mean here's just some of them and and here's another book by Dr Waite the heresies of Westcott and heart where he he goes through and he basically shows you they use the corrupt alexandrian text to create all these versions The NIV the revised standard even the new King James version is corrupted with it the English Standard Version New American Standard Version so on um Wescott Hart believed Jesus is not God the scripture is not inspired they love to Darwin they were in the ghostly Guild they love seances Heaven and Hell were not literal they love Gnostic there was no bodily resurrection of Jesus man is divine just a few of what they believe and these are the guys that created the text to create 99 of your modern versions of the Bible that preachers are preaching from today and this is a little bit about the the when they commissioned it the Trap is set in 1870 the convention of the Church of England commissioned the revision of the authorized version a gleam of Hope shown in the eye of every Roman Catholic in England and the continent an eager anticipation filled every Jesuit inspired uh Protestant scholar in England although it was meant to correct a few supposed errors in the authorized version the textual critics of the day assured themselves that they would never again have to submit to the Divine authority of the universal text or the received text the Byzantine text in November of 1870 Wes got testified of just such a spirit in a letter to Dr Benson in a few minutes I go with Lightfoot to Westminster more will come of these meetings I think than a simply than simply a revised version more is going to come of this there hope
this isn't a plan the convocation had instructed the revision committee not to deal with the underlying Greek text of the authorized version they were instructed to do as follows number one to introduce a few alterations as possible into the text of the King James Bible and two to limit the expression of any alterations to the language of the authorized version so this is what they said they were going to do but not with the D right but Westcott and Horton had other plans they had edited the corrupt Vatican and synatic manuscripts of the local texts of Alexandria and produce their own Greek text it says wisely they had never published it and thus the existence as I know see they didn't publish it because they knew Dean John Bergen would tear it apart and expose them so they waited and they didn't publish but they had their they they had their complete new translation of the Greek New Testament right to be used to create new Bible versions so the existence of their new thing was unknown was Scott and Hort did not have to worry about the investigative eyes of their contemporary Scholars such as Dean John Bergen had he been published earlier it surely would have been exposed as corrupt and unfit for translation into English doctors Wescott and heart were definitely wise as serpent but unfortunately they were equally as harmful since the committee had been instructed not to deal with matters of the Greek text and the West Scott and Hort text had not been published it was necessary for the two Cambridge Catholics to submit it little by little to the committee Even This was done in secret in order to establish their own Greek text as authoritative or authoritative they first planned the strategy prior to the first meeting of the committee their old friend Bishop Lightfoot was even there to help Wescott as Wes got notes in a letter Horton dated May 1870 your note came with one from Ellicott this morning though I think the convocation is not competent to initiate such a measure yet I feel that we three agree together it would be wrong not to make the best of it as Lightfoot says there is some hope that alternative readings might find a place in the margin again it sounds like they were conspiring right it says the next month he wrote to Lightfoot himself ought we not to have a conference before the first meeting for revision there are many points on which it is important that we should be agreed then they secretly submitted their text to the committee members and stayed close by their size to see to it that their scheme was carried out this fact Dr Wilkinson attest the new Greek Testament upon which Wescott and Hort had been working for 20 years was Portion by portion secretly committed into the hand of the revision committee their Greek text was strongly radical and revolutionary the revisers followed the guidance of the two Cambridge editors
West Scott and Hort who were constantly at their elbow and whose radical Greek New Testament deviating the furthest possible from the received text is to all intents and purposes the Greek New Testament followed by the revision committee this Greek text in the main follows the Vatican and the synocatus manuscripts these actions reek of Jesuit underhandedness although Westcott and heart were men of scholarship they were not Men of Integrity whatsoever so we're going to move on from some of this I believe and I agree with him I believe they were working for the Vatican this gives you a little rundown of what we've been through today you can find these they're out there just put in the traditional text line or the Texas receptus line versus the alexandrian line and you'll see this but you see how it comes down this is this is the path we have followed today and it comes on down from there to basically the King James Bible you know those Bibles we looked at Tyndale Matthews the great Bible Martin Luther's Bible Erasmus come on down to the text that was used to make King James version but then you've got the these versions here it came down from the synaticus and the alexandrinus and the vaticanists and they came down and that's what Westcott and Horton used and they made all your funky versions of the Bible so that's why we see all these changes now that's what we're going to look at we're going to look at some changes this morning of course that's the end of that's the end of the PowerPoint but this little book I think the ancient word of God by Ken Johnson he covers some of it but this little book Let's weigh the evidence here kind of com just does a side-by-side comparison of many verses um whoa let's see here there's just so many we're going to go through some of them here all right for instance I'm going to give you one here all right well we brought this up let me let me just read this part here to you um okay he says there are five thousand there are between five thousand and thirty six thousand changes between a version based on the received Byzantine text
and a version based on the alexandrian text that Wisconsin heart news all right so when you compare a King James version to an NIV you're talking about thousands you hear me thousands of significant changes all right and we're going to look at some of them for instance let's let's I'm going to give you one this one's going to be on your test so you know this is an important one because it's important remember all cults deny and the gnostics denied the deity of Jesus as God the Creator okay God In the Flesh the Creed so um let's look at this here's the verse first Timothy 3 16. let me write this one down first Timothy 3 16 in the King James says this you can you want to put them up you can put up the I don't know if you can do both okay well look we're gonna we're gonna compare here the uh this verse we're going to compare with the uh a few Bibles here but anyway you can put up the verse in the King James version but first Timothy 3 16 okay do that switch them back and forth but anyway first Timothy 3 16 says and without controversy great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest In the Flesh justified in the spirit scene of angels preached into the Gentiles believed on in the world received up into Glory so this verse clearly teaches that Jesus is god notice God was manifest In the Flesh Jesus is the one who came in the flesh therefore Jesus is God so is this the the ASV and without controversy great is the mystery of godliness he who was manifested in the flesh does that give you the same Doctrine or theology no he completely removes it's it's just removes an important part of this reverse for instance the uh The New American Standard says and by Common confession great is the mystery of godliness he who was revealed in the flesh right the living Bible it is quite true that the way to live a Godly life is not an easy manner but the answer lies in Christ who came to Earth as a man was proved spotless pure in his Spirit was served by angels and preached among the Nations was accepted by men everywhere and was received up again into Glory um but notice it leaves out God was manifesting the flesh so that's a pretty serious change wouldn't you say and there were there was no need to make this change why because particularly and Dr Ken Johnson brings this up in his early church father's book that it was
talked about by the second century church I mean we already have the scriptures that spell this out right we already have what the apostles taught about this and and what the Old Testament said he'd be Emmanuel God With Us the son would be called you know the Mighty God the Everlasting father the Prince of Peace right so we have the Old Testament teaching we had the apostles teaching that Jesus the Messiah Christ would also he'd be the son but he'd also be God In the Flesh it's a great mystery this the understanding of the Trinity it is a great mystery right but still we the the deity of Jesus Christ has got fully God In the Flesh and that's what you know Colossians 2 8 9 says that he is the fullness of the godhead bodily right the gnostics denied this all of the Cults denied this so anybody who is taking from the alexandrian text you're taking from people who were trying to diminish this in the scriptures they would try to cut that out right so that's why you get this cut out in here and that's why it's so it's so vital that's not the same I don't care you can say God said his word didn't change right and and and and like I said Dr Johnson said very early on even in the second century Church father said God was manifested in the flesh that's how they said in their writings Jesus was God manifested In the Flesh so these guys have to deny the original text they have to deny what the Old Testament teaches about Christ being God manifests to the Flesh and they had to pick corrupt versions of you know from these from Egypt and Alexandria and from the Vatican to charts trying to diminish this all right to undermine Protestant Christianity that's what this is all about uh let's look at another verse here let's see here uh okay here's Romans 14 10. Romans 14 10. and 12. so we'll let him get that up here if it says here for we shall all stand before the Judgment seat of Christ right so we shall all stand before the Judgment seat of Christ and then it says this so then every one of us shall give an account of himself to God well if if Jesus Christ is the judge and we must stand to give an account and it says we're going to give account to God what does this verse say ing Christ Jesus Is God right all right so let's look at the new American standard version of this verse says for we shall all stand before the Judgment seat of God so then each one of us shall give an account of himself to God you know what it just took out of there the seat of Christ Christ being God it
took out the connection coincidence no The New American Standard came from the corrupted text the King James came from the uncorrupted text one says we'll give an account at the Judgment seat of Christ will give an account to God meaning making the connection Christ is God in the flesh The New American Standard changes that you wonder any wonder why there's such conviction confusion in the world why why Pastor Dean and others have to constantly teach things that should be common knowledge to Christians because they're reading Bibles they don't even teach this stuff anymore right um let's keep going uh did you put up the other one I'm sorry I didn't know if you did or not you've got the which one the American Standard well this was The New American Standard that I had here so The New American Standard yeah so y'all see it there judgment seat of Christ judgment seat of of God taking it out amazing let's look at Acts 20 28. Acts 20 28 again another important one here it says uh take heed therefore unto yourselves into all the flocked over which the Holy Ghost has made you overseers to feed the Church of God which he hath purchased with his own blood now anybody who knows grammar here he says to feed the Church of God comma which he has purchased with his own blood he's talking about the blood of God has purchased the church well who is that Jesus right well here the American Standard Version says take heed unto yourselves into all the flock in which the Holy Ghost Holy Spirit hath made you Bishops to feed the Church of the Lord which he purchased with his own blood now saying Lord you could say well that one's close right but again you could take Lord as they called other humans Lord Sarah called Abraham Lord so if somebody wanted to interpret it that way they could but if you just leave it as it is God purchased it with his own blood the revised Standard Version says this this is the revised Standard Version is a big change because it says it's take heed to yourselves into all the flock in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to care for the Church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own son it's not what the original says does you see how switching that makes it out like well Jesus could be a Son of God yeah he's the son of God but so could I be you see what I'm saying um and then you know and why is this important well one of the reasons is
important we got crazy people out there saying God demanded a human sacrifice there's a big difference between God and demanded a human sacrifice versus he went and laid down his own life as a sacrifice you see the difference we actually have people saying this I won't believe Christianity I won't believe the god of the Bible because he Demands a human sacrifice no he became the sacrifice himself that's different he laid down his life to save us he didn't demand anyone else that's why it's so important to understand the Trinity three distinct Parts but one only one God all right let's keep going um there's so many verses here I'm gonna try to find some of the main ones here yeah let's go to Micah 5 2 because this has been an important verse in your apologetics class about the prophecy concerning the birth of Jesus being born in Bethlehem and we talked about this also talking about him being from old from Everlasting not having a beginning all right so Micah 5 2 in the King James version from the received text from the Byzantine text from the majority text says but thou Bethlehem Ephrata though thou be little among the thousands of Judah yet under these income forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel whose goings forth have been from old from Everlasting right from Ever from eternity past no beginning but listen to the revised Standard Version Micah 5 2 the revised Standard Version from the alexandrian West Scott and Hort corrupted vaticanus Syndicate his text right here's what it says but you owe Bethlehem Ephrata who are little among the clans of Judah from you shall come forth for me the one to be ruler in Israel whose origin is from old from ancient days origin the moment you say Jesus had a beginning he had an origin then he's not God who is eternal this is a direct attack on the deity of Jesus from the gnostics in Alexandria passed down to the vaticanus and The Syndicate us to West God and heart to your rsvasv NIV Message Bible we should even call the message a Bible a reason it's not a Bible it's a something fire starter it's what I'd use it for just all right um
oh let's see I thank God I found this little book I you know when I was first first Saved I read this little book the Lord set me on the right path instantly um oh again that it's just verse after verse I can't you we'd be here all day if I did all of them let's see here okay here's a good one Colossians 114. and you'll see the definite issue here in this one Colossians 1 14 the King James version says in whom we have Redemption through his blood even the Forgiveness of sins right you hear that Colossians 1 14 we have Redemption through his blood even the Forgiveness of sins the American Standard taken from the alexandrian texts in whom we have our Redemption the Forgiveness of sins what'd it leave out through his blood same thing in the revised standard uh the revised Standard Version does the same thing why would you leave that part out who hates the blood of Jesus more than anything that's right the devil and those who follow him here's an interesting one let's go to Zechariah 9 9. this is a prophecy I don't even know if we covered this prophecy in your apologetics class so this one might be on your test your next test Zechariah 9 9 Rejoice greatly o Daughter of Zion shout o daughter of Jerusalem Behold thy King cometh unto thee he is just and having salvation lowly in writing upon an ass and upon the cult the foal of an ass so right here it says this is the prophecy of Jesus when he rides into Jerusalem on the cold all right it says having salvation and what were they crying when he wrote in on that Palm Sunday right Hosanna son of David save us why would they be saying save us they believed he was he had salvation right well listen to what the revised Standard Version says the revised Standard Version says Rejoice greatly o Daughter of Zion Shadow out o daughter of Jerusalem Lo your king comes to you triumphant and Victorious is he humble in riding on an ass in the cult the fold of an act leaves out and having salvation so the ASV has it
I guess they said that was just too obvious right right so they're sticking the Old Testament they're probably sticking to the the correct manuscripts in the Old Testament but not the Greek New Testament all right let's go on let's look at a few more um um yeah well let's look at this one first Peter 4 1. we're gonna look at a few more y'all don't mind do you we got a little time this morning um so first Peter 4 1 says this for as much then as Christ had suffered for us in the flesh arm yourselves likewise with the same mind so The New American Standard Version says therefore since Christ has suffered In the Flesh arm yourselves also with the same purpose it leaves out that Christ suffered for us why would you leave that out right now we're going to get to an interesting verse here Mark 16 9-20 now the reason is is over and over and over again you will hear you'll you will see in the margins of Bibles that these were not that Mark 9 through 16 9-20 were not found in some of the manuscripts now this is really to cast doubt on this scripture all right but this is important and listen to this very closely this is a very mentally says these verses tell about the resurrection of Christ in The New American Standard Bible they put brackets around all 12 of these verses to say that they were probably not in the original writings now they put this in the in the margins right and you'll hear this you'll hear this from theologians but that's a very misleading statement because out of 620 ancient manuscripts of The Book of Mark these 12 verses are found in 618 of them meaning they're only not in two right to say that they were probably not in the original writings is ridiculous and Dr Ken Johnson says the same thing as well and church history we see the and and why why would the this passage in um why would this passage from Mark 9 to 20
the end be so so hated because this is the passage where Jesus says from verse 15 or go into all the world preach the gospel to Every Creature these signs shall follow them that believe in my name they will cast out demons they will speak with new tongues they drink any daily things I hurt them they shall take up serpents they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover the devil hates that because that's a true church now in the ancient Church fathers he points out how the ancient Church fathers pointed out that all the way into the second and third Century A.D that the true Christians were still casting out demons Healing The Sick and even raising the Dead so you got people out there saying it didn't keep happening in church history after the apostles and yet the church fathers of those times said it was still happening so none of those things disagree why would you take out Mark 9 I mean Mark Seeker Mark 16 9-20 why would you take that out you have an agenda right I know if I was the devil I'd want that part out of the Bible for sure um oh let's see oh here we go here's an interesting Luke 4 4. Luke 4 4 says this and Jesus answered him saying this is King James received text and Jesus answered him saying it is written that man shall not live by bread alone but by every word of God Luke 4 4 The New American Standard says and Jesus answered his written man shall not live by bread alone what so you're not gonna live by bread what do we live by then Jesus The New American Standard and the didn't tell me um it's just so interesting uh oh here's a good one so let's go to Isaiah 7 14. this one's attacked revised standard I wonder what the American Standard they may leave it alone I don't know but here we go of course King James received text masoretic the original masoratic text and the Old Testament says therefore the Lord himself should give you a sign Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear son and shall call his name Emmanuel so
here you have virgin birth and God In the Flesh right very important verse revised standard says this therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign Behold a young woman shall conceive and bear son and shall call his name Emmanuel a young woman changing it but remember how we pointed out the word Alma always used to be a virgin and what sign would there be of a young woman just getting pregnant and having a son that's not a sign that happens every day what a virgin getting pregnant and having something now we gotta sign makes no sense um The Good News Bible I remember these everybody anybody remember the Good News Bible you ever seen one of those it's Fire Starter all right it's so bad here's what it says well then the Lord himself will give you a sign a young woman who is pregnant will have a son and we'll name him Emmanuel they call this a bible let me tell you people wrote that thing burning in hell um I mean there's so much here let's see okay and here's a subtle change now listen to this this is Luke 1 34. that's why I say you know y'all have heard me sometimes when I'm preaching and teaching and I'll say here's what this scripture says and I read it and say if your Bible says something different you better get a different one right because some of this this you just can't it's just because it has the name Bible on it doesn't mean it's a Bible all right uh here's Luke 134 then said Mary unto the angel to Gabriel when he came how shall this be seeing I know not a man now that phrase Old Testament New Testament meaning I have not had sexual relations with a man I haven't known a man in that way right Luke 1 34 in the revised Standard Version says and Mary said to the angel how shall this be since I have no husband there's a lot of women have no husband and still get pregnant that know a man or have known a man and you see what I'm saying subtle change why would you make that subtle change unless you're trying to deny the Virgin birth you're trying to to to weed out scriptures that teach it Satan is diabolical here's another one Luke 2 33. I love this one I remembered this one from when I read this many years ago Luke 2 33 King James received text Byzantine text majority text
says and Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him Luke 2 33 in The New American Standard and his father and his mother were amazed at the things which were being said about him notice how the King James the received text the Byzantine text says Joseph and his mother not his father and his mother making clear Joseph was not his father the King James makes that clear the received text the Byzantine that one confuses the matter you see Satan is good it is subtleties he's real good at it changing something how many of you know if you go back listen if you go back and pay attention to the temptation of Jesus uh Matthew 4 Luke 4 where Jesus is being tempted by the devil the devil actually when he's trying to get him to cast himself down from the mountain he he quotes a scripture and most people would just say oh yeah he's quoting scripture and then then you find out oh he's quoting Psalm 91 he's actually quoting a verse from Psalm 91 but most people miss that Satan changes one word in the verse because if you go back and read Psalm 91 the protection or the Deliverance is conditional if you right Satan said cast yourself down for it is written he shall bear thee up lest thou Dash them at any time Thou shalt Dash thy foot against the son so what the devil did with that because oh you can do this because the scripture says God will protect you at any time it doesn't matter what you do God will protect you it's not what the verse says in Psalm 91. so the devil changes a little bit that's why Jesus said you don't tempt God now Jesus could have said you know you're misquoting that devil but don't we know that's what he does he missed out just one word he add one word take away a word let's just change it a little bit that's why look look you have an original Greek text you're going to come along and say we're going to do a revision and we've got thousands up into upwards of Ten Thousand Words missing who does that as the little ones will say the devil right that's who does that yeah that's like the whole book of Romans missing 10 000 words go goodbye we just take it out go ahead big dog your name just got taken out of the book of life too um
goodness I'm not even going he's got a whole chapter here comparing to Living Bible I don't know anybody that still reads the living Bible if you do start ripping Pages out ball them up and put them under your fire you know your your wood and then Light It Up um oh goodness the living Bible's so horrible okay omissions let's just look at some omissions of some some things that are left out uh Matthew 17 21. um this is completely left out but this kind goeth not out except but by prayer and fasting foreign 1721 what's your what's your Matthew 17 21 say you put it up there American Standard New American Standard hold on a second we'll see here hold on yeah well let's go over to let's go we'll go over to these this is a little this part here is a little confusing I don't remember this issue here but we go over to uh like Matthew 125. let's look at that Matthew 1 25. and he knew her not until she had brought forth her firstborn son and he called his name Jesus that's Matthew 1 25. here and he kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a son and he called his name Jesus now he left out firstborn why just The New American Standard just leaves that out Matthew 6 33 King James version but seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you New American Standard but seek ye first the kingdom and his right his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you whose kingdom who's righteousness why did it change kingdom of God um oh you love this one Matthew 9 13. Jesus said in Matthew 9 13 in the King James receive texts the Byzantine texts for I am not come to call the righteous but Sinners to repentance pretty important verse right The New American Standard says for I did not come to call the righteous but sinners leaves out repentance isn't it amazing in that what most preachers are doing today leaving out repentance why it's probably not in their Bible
version they're using um oh let's see this is interesting Matthew 16 20. again I'm just skipping around here Matthew 16 20 then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ The New American Standard says then he warned his disciples that they should tell no man that he was the Christ leaves out Jesus who hates that name the devil not the devil all right let's see here what else we got here I said there's just one after the other after the other listen yeah again same thing's left out in the gospel of Mark all right the gospel Mark 1 14. now after that John was put in prison Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God The New American Standard the corrupt text says and after John had been taken into custody Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel of God why do you take out Kingdom to me and that's even pointless but Mark 2 17. Mark 2 17 King James received texts Byzantine texts when Jesus heard it he saith unto them they that are whole have no need of a physician but they that are sick I came not to call the righteous but Sinners to repentance New American Standard the alexandrian text and hearing this Jesus said to them it is not those who are healthy who need a physician but those who are sick I came not to call the righteous but sinners leaves out to repentance now you can look up all these I mean I could go through he says you can look them up for yourself but in these verses words or phrases or even the whole verse is missing and he's got a list here of 80. scripture passages Mark 7 16 Mark 9 24. I mean just I can just go down the list 80. revelation 22 19. let's put that up revelation 22 19. we mentioned this earlier but let's put it on the screen here and actually this has got this is good I mean he's got a good like this uh right after this goes into where did our King James Bible come from and basically a lot of the stuff we covered this morning is in this little book it's a little good little book to get I think what did I pay four dollars and fifty cents for this not expensive at all revelation 22 19 says and if any man shall take away from
the words of the book of this prophecy God shall take away his part out of the book of life and out of the holy city and from the things which are written in this book now some people say well this is just talking about Revelation no because it's also quoted in the Book of Proverbs so we don't mess with God's word we don't take stuff out we don't add to we don't take stuff out and add to it and then call it a Bible not a good idea right um yeah this is some good stuff I wouldn't I would encourage you it probably wouldn't hurt you to uh get this little book it's a good little reference to have if you're talking with somebody and you know you can pull this up and say I wish I'll show you I mean I use this book for years right here this little let's weigh the evidence by Barry Burton good little book um anyway not going to teach too much more on this you guys get the gist of it books we use this morning let's weigh the evidence by Barry Burton the ancient word of God by Dr Ken Johnson stuff is also in a very highly college level technical type manual defending the Kingdom's Bible by Dr D.A Waite some of this is also in the uh the ancient Church fathers and what was the book what was the title of the book I had up here I can't remember now on the PowerPoint by sip did y'all write that down okay yeah let's get that title of that book for everybody so because it's again it's it's online free so you can just read it oh go and read yeah it's it's really it's really an easy read it's not long it's not uh it's not overly difficult but just a lot of good info because uh you know I want you guys to know this stuff about where your Bible came from where it began to be corrupted there it is Gibbs understandable history of the Bible Samuel C Gip PhD it's on chick.com free you can read that and I would encourage you it's again that's a good solid it's got all the references at the end of the book on the quotes where he got them from well I hope you guys uh learned something today this is something you know again I hit an overview of it today but you guys can dig into this you can find out all you like to find out about Westcott and Hort and the corruption of the text and you can find it all out but it's it's it's good to commit this again you say this is why is this an apologetics and again I want to repeat
people ask these questions what Bible do I use why does your Bible say this I heard you say this but mine says this this comes up all the time so anyway God bless you guys class dismissed
