Israel's Regathering

Isaiah promised that the Lord would recover His people “the second time” and gather Israel and Judah from the nations. Watchman 33 connects that promise with the return of Jewish communities, the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, and the continuing ingathering of immigrants from the diaspora.

Isaiah 11:11–12

11And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

12And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

Isaiah 66:8

8Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? [or] shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

THE HISTORICAL CONNECTION

Scattered among the nations. Gathered again to the land.

The First Zionist Congress opens in Basel

Theodor Herzl convened delegates who established the Zionist Organization and adopted the Basel Program calling for a publicly secured home for the Jewish people in Palestine.

Britain issues the Balfour Declaration

British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour expressed government support for establishing a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine while stating that the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities must not be prejudiced.

The United Nations recommends partition

United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181 recommended independent Arab and Jewish states and a special international regime for Jerusalem.

The State of Israel is proclaimed

David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel. The declaration said the state would be open to Jewish immigration and the ingathering of exiles, and the United States recognized the provisional government that same day.

Early mass immigration reshapes the new state

Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics recorded 684,275 immigrants from May 15, 1948 through the end of 1951, a movement larger than the state’s population at independence.

The continuing ingathering is measured

Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics reported that more than 3.5 million immigrants had arrived since the state’s establishment, including about 1.66 million since 1990.
