Ask contextual questions
Before forming a conclusion, identify the speaker, original audience, covenant setting, surrounding argument, and genre. Poetry, visions, apocalyptic symbols, and direct promises communicate in different ways.
Then compare related passages. A later inspired writer may clarify an earlier promise, but the later use should be demonstrated from the text rather than assumed.
Test every claim
The Bereans are commended for receiving the word readily while also searching the Scriptures. A teachable heart and careful verification belong together.
Memory cue: Name the four anchors of context: speaker, audience, setting, and surrounding passage.
