THE EXAMINATION

The verdict

The claim that supernatural signs authenticate a minister, message, or revival even when its doctrine, character, and fruit contradict Scripture is false. God truly works miracles, gives gifts by the Holy Ghost, and confirms His word; yet Scripture also warns that false prophets can show signs. A manifestation must therefore be tested by fidelity to Jesus Christ, apostolic truth, holy fruit, and obedience to God—not accepted merely because it is extraordinary.

What the teaching claims

This error appears whenever an experience becomes its own proof. Healings, prophecies, visions, unusual physical reactions, large crowds, emotional intensity, or a leader’s apparent spiritual power are treated as sufficient evidence that God approves the ministry. Questions about the gospel being preached, the handling of Scripture, the leader’s manner of life, or the lasting fruit among hearers are dismissed as unbelief or resistance to the Holy Spirit.

The issue is not whether God still heals, speaks through the gifts of the Spirit, or moves upon people in powerful ways. Scripture commands believers not to quench the Spirit and not to despise prophesyings, but in the same breath commands, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (). Neither blanket rejection nor uncritical acceptance is biblical discernment.

The strongest appeal

Advocates rightly observe that Jesus performed mighty works, the apostles ministered in signs and wonders, and Paul described manifestations of the Spirit given for the profit of the body. , , , , and provide substantial biblical reason to expect God’s supernatural activity. They may also appeal to the conversions, renewed prayer, generosity, or testimonies that sometimes accompany a revival movement.

Those passages must not be minimized. A biblical examination does not begin from the assumption that everything unusual is fraudulent or demonic. It begins by acknowledging the real work of the Holy Ghost and then applying the tests God Himself supplied, because a counterfeit is dangerous precisely when it resembles something real.

A sign is not self-authenticating

gives the decisive Old Testament test. Even if a prophet’s sign or wonder comes to pass, Israel must reject him if he uses it to turn the people after other gods. The fulfilled sign does not overrule God’s already revealed word. adds that a failed prediction exposes presumption, but shows that apparent success alone still cannot establish faithfulness.

Jesus gives the same warning. False Christs and false prophets will show great signs and wonders in order to deceive (). The man of sin comes with power, signs, and lying wonders (). describes deceptive wonders used to direct worship toward the beast. Scripture never permits the church to reason, “A miracle happened, therefore the messenger and message are from God.”

Jesus requires doctrine, obedience, and fruit

joins three tests that this error separates. Jesus warns of false prophets in sheep’s clothing, says they are known by their fruits, and then describes people who prophesied, cast out devils, and did many wonderful works in His name but practiced iniquity. Their supernatural claims and Christian vocabulary did not replace knowing and obeying Christ.

Fruit is more than visible growth, excitement, or stories of success. contrasts the works of the flesh with love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. and require tested character in church leaders. warns that covetousness, sensuality, and exploitation can accompany religious speech. A ministry’s fruit must be judged over time by Scripture’s standard.

The confession of Christ must be tested

John commands believers, “try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (). The immediate test concerns the true confession of Jesus Christ come in the flesh, and verses 5–6 distinguish the spirit of truth from the spirit of error by response to apostolic testimony. likewise warns about another Jesus, another spirit, and another gospel.

The Holy Ghost glorifies Jesus and guides into truth (). He does not contradict the Scriptures He inspired, excuse sin, redirect devotion toward a personality, or make correction unnecessary. Claims of revelation must be judged in the congregation (), and prophets remain responsible for orderly, self-controlled ministry (, 40).

Why this error matters

When manifestations become unquestionable, people can be bound to a leader instead of matured in Christ. Biblical concerns are silenced, failed prophecies are rationalized, harmed people are blamed for lacking faith, and emotional pressure can be mistaken for repentance or conversion. The result may be fascination with power while truth, holiness, and love are neglected.

The opposite reaction is also dangerous. Exposure to counterfeits can harden believers into denying every gift and every present work of God. Scripture calls the church to a more demanding path: welcome what is genuinely from the Holy Ghost, reject what is false, and refuse to surrender discernment in either direction.

The biblical response

Test the message by the whole counsel of Scripture, beginning with the identity and gospel of Jesus Christ. Examine the minister’s character and handling of money, authority, sexuality, and correction. Judge prophecy rather than surrendering judgment to the prophet. Look for enduring repentance, love, holiness, and obedience—not merely an intense meeting or an impressive testimony.

Believers can pray boldly for healing and the gifts of the Spirit while remaining sober and watchful. “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God” (). Genuine power does not fear biblical examination, because the Spirit of truth always honors the Lord Jesus and agrees with His word.
